Nicole Postpones Her Day in Court
After watching her pal Paris Hilton get sent to jail—twice—it's no wonder Nicole Richie is dragging her heels when it comes to learning her own fate.
The diminutive Simple Life sidekick, who could be facing up to a year behind bars for a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, has succeeded in delaying her day in court once again.
A judge granted Richie's attorney a postponement in the case until July 11, but he was adamant that no further delays would be permitted, meaning the trial will begin on that date or within 10 days of it, according to Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
Richie was arrested in December after driving the wrong way on a Los Angeles freeway. Police said she confessed to smoking marijuana and taking Vicodin before getting behind the wheel.
She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment hearing in February.
Because Richie has a previous DUI conviction on her record, she faces a minimum sentence of five days in jail under California law.
While Richie has not yet paid Hilton a visit in jail, it seems likely that the relentless coverage of her friend's jailhouse trials and tribulations has made her even less enthusiastic about the prospect of doing time herself.
Earlier this month, Richie told E! News' Ryan Seacrest that she was "nervous" about the possibility of going to jail, but that she was prepared to "take responsibility" and "deal with whatever consequences" come her way.
"I just have to show up and fight my case," she said.
