Newhart Pal Poston Dies

Tom Poston didn't necessarily make TV history. But he racked up a lot TV history.

The deadpan comic actor, whose prime-time career spanned the early days of network television right up to the Disney Channel present, with memorable stops along the way on Newhart, The Bob Newhart Show and That '70s Show, died Monday at his Los Angeles home after what reports described as a brief illness.

He was 85.

Poston's survivors include wife and fellow Bob Newhart Show alum Suzanne Pleshette, who announced last year that she'd been diagnosed with lung cancer.

An Emmy winner back in 1959 for his work on Steve Allen's namesake sketch-variety show, Poston earned three more Emmy nominations, although no more statuettes, for Newhart. Poston played the Stratford Inn's not-necessarily handy handyman George Utley on the 1982-1990 sitcom.

"Tom was always the 'go-to guy' on Newhart," Bob Newhart said in a statement to a local wire service Tuesday.

Newhart, who also worked with Poston on his 1990s sitcom Bob, and his 1970s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show, called the actor a "good and longtime friend."

Poston earned a fifth and final Emmy nod in 1991 for an appearance on Coach.

Always the costar, never the star, all of Poston's Emmy nominations were for supporting or guest work.

Sitcoms were a Poston specialty--he made a mark on The Bob Newhart Show with just a handful of appearances as Dr. Bob Hartley's college crony, the Peeper. In general, if you can name a comedy series of the last 50 years that Poston wasn't on at least once, you better make sure it existed.

That '70s Show? Yup. Poston was Kitty's dad. Grace Under Fire? Yup. Poston was Dave Thomas' dad. Family Matters? Yup. Poston was a custodian.

Will and Grace, 8 Simple Rules, Malcolm & Eddie, The Ellen Show, Home Improvement, Murphy Brown, Becker, Mork & Mindy, Alice...come on, even The Suite Life of Zack and Cody? Yup. He was on all of them.

Somehow, Poston never did make it onto Seinfeld or Friends. From the looks of his credits, nearly 100 TV and film of them, per the Internet Movie Database, it's quite possible he was too busy to squeeze either in.

Per one oft-told legend, Poston could've added to his workload by accepting the lead in 1960s spy spoof Get Smart. It all worked out in the end--he guested on that show, too.

Born Oct 17, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio, Poston was almost as busy on Broadway in the 1950s as he was on TV. His stage credits from the era included the comedies Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? and Golden Fleecing, costarring a young New York actress by the name of Pleshette.

Poston and Pleshette went on to marry others, divorce others, and, decades later, find themselves widowed by others. The two wed in 2001. He was 79; she was 64.

In recent years, Poston did what he'd done in earlier years--work. He even added to more film resume with bits in Christmas with the Kranks and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
