NBC Books Isaiah, Jerry and Donald
Isaiah Washington, Jerry Seinfeld and Donald Trump are just a few of the names in the Peacock's playbook for the upcoming season.
Washington and Seinfeld are slated to make guest appearances on separate NBC series, while Trump will head up a celebrity edition of The Apprentice, the network announced Monday.
Washington will appear in at least five episodes of NBC's new remake of '70s series Bionic Woman, playing a mysterious figure with a hidden agenda that leaves viewers in the dark as to whether he's friend or foe to superpowered Jamie Sommers (Michelle Ryan).
His character works for the enigmatic scientific agency responsible for engineering the bionics that give Jamie her new abilities, and he is charged with teaching her how to use them.
"Great television is all about brilliant actors who can inhabit strong characters," Katherine Pope, president of Universal Media Studios, said in a statement. "That's what this role on Bionic Woman called for, and Isaiah is the perfect actor to do it."
Washington has also signed a development deal with the network to potentially star in an action series based on an idea he pitched for the 2008-09 season.
Despite the fired Grey's Anatomy star's rocky ending with ABC last month, NBC expressed no qualms about adding him to its talent roster.
"Isaiah Washington is a very talented and versatile actor, and I've always admired his work," said Ben Silverman, cochairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "These episodes on Bionic Woman and the new development deal will showcase his talents, and we look forward to producing some great television together."
The network is also celebrating Seinfeld's impending return to the fold, with the funnyman slated to star as himself in the Oct. 4 second season premiere of 30 Rock.
"I think it's going to be so refreshing for me to be playing myself in a show that has nothing to do with neurotic, dysfunctional New York characters," Seinfeld said in a statement.
Series creator, executive producer and star Tina Fey was also enthusiastic about Seinfeld's guest slot.
"Finally, my parents have an excuse to watch the show," she said.
Meanwhile, the network has a new business plan in mind for Trump's Apprentice.
The show will return midseason for a seventh outing and its first-ever celebrity edition, Silverman said Monday. Rather than going to work for the mogul, the winner will donate the proceeds to charity.
No contestants have been announced, but The Donald already has one celebrity in mind for the boardroom—his nemesis, Rosie O'Donnell.
"It would be great to have Rosie on The Apprentice," Silverman said. "Donald personally told me to extend an invitation to her."
The former View cohost's rep was quick to shoot down the offer Monday, stating, "It will never happen in this lifetime or beyond."
In other news from NBC, the network announced plans to partner with illusionists Criss Angel and Uri Geller on the live competition series Phenomenon, with the aim of discovering the next great mentalist.
Each contestant will have the chance to put their mystical abilities to the test, with Geller and Angel offering their assessment of the talent displays. The winning mentalist will ultimately be determined by viewer voting.
NBC also made room on the fall schedule for Singing Bee, the summer series hosted by Joey Fatone, which challenges contestants to correctly sing the lyrics to popular songs without the benefit of background music.
The tuneful competition was originally scheduled to air later in the year after the conclusion of 1 vs. 100, but will now begin airing on Sept. 25, while 1 vs. 100 was bumped to midseason.
Finally, the network announced that Alicia Witt is joining the Law & Order: Criminal Intent beat.
The erstwhile Cybill offspring plays Detective Nola Falacci and is partnered with Chris Noth's Detective Mike Logan while Julianne Nicholson (aka Detective Megan Wheeler) is on maternity leave.
Criminal Intent's new episodes will first air on cable on USA and then at an unspecified later date on NBC.
