Mulroney and Keener Single Each Other Out

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

A judge signed off on Dermot Mulroney and Catherine Keener's divorce Tuesday, according to court documents obtained by Extra. Their newfound single status will not officially take effect until Dec. 19, however, when they'll be legally free to swap vows with others.

The exes will share legal custody of their eight-year-old son, Clyde, and neither actor will have to pay spousal or child support. Instead, during mediation that—unheard of in Hollywood—each entered into without an attorney present, they agreed to a confidential marital settlement.

The couple reportedly separated in May 2005 and Mulroney filed for divorce in June after almost 17 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason. He and Keener met on the set of Survival Quest in 1989 and tied the knot the following year. They shared screen time again in 2001's Lovely & Amazing.

Keener, an indie darling who proved her blockbuster mettle in The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005 and whose turn as Harper Lee in Capote earned her an Oscar nod, is currently on the big screen in Sean Penn's adaptation of Into the Wild.

The 48-year-old actress has at least six other films in the works, as well, including Spike Jones' all-star take on Where the Wild Things Are, slated for an October 2008 release, and the comedy Hamlet 2, in which she plays a high school English teacher who instructs her students to write a sequel to the classic tragedy.

Mulroney, 44, who has covered thematically similar leading man territory in such films as My Best Friend's Wedding and The Wedding Date, has also racked up quite a résumé as a character actor. He recently appeared in The Family Stone, Zodiac, Gracie and Georgia Rule and is up next in Jolene, based on the E.L. Doctorow story.
