Morrissey's Throat Misery
He's always prone to emotional pain, but this time Morrissey seems to be suffering from the physical variety.
The ever-sorrowful singer abruptly cut short a performance at Boston's Bank of America Pavilion Tuesday, after complaining early on that his voice was shot from recording an appearance for the Late Show under less than ideal conditions.
"We recorded the David Letterman show last night in a studio that was 30 degrees below zero," Morrissey explained from the stage. "Twenty-nine degrees below I can take, but 30 below was too much and unfortunately it will not just be the emotions cracking tonight but my voice as well."
The former Smiths frontman made it through seven songs in all, gamely ripping off his shirt and tossing it into the audience during a rousing version of "Let Me Kiss You," then left the stage and never returned.
Minutes later, a spokesman came out and announced that Morrissey had "lost his voice," drawing more than a few boos from the unhappy crowd.
The singer was reportedly diagnosed with a throat infection and advised by his doctor not to sing for three days.
The spokesman claimed the Boston show would be rescheduled and that tickets for the aborted performance would be honored, but promoter Live Nation had yet to confirm that.
Concerts scheduled for Wednesday in Northampton, Massachusetts and Friday in Philadelphia were also postponed. There was no word yet on when they might be rescheduled.
Morrissey was due to resume his tour Saturday, with a performance at New York's Madison Square Garden.
His vocal cord-icing Letterman performance airs Friday.
After releasing Ringleader of the Tormentors last year, the Mancunian moper could be gearing up to record some new material.
In a recent question-and-answer session on fansite true-to-you.net, the Moz said he is weighing the option of signing with Warner Music Group to record a new studio album against taking his tour to some exotic destinations.
"I presently have the option to tour for the remainder of 2007, or start a new album," he said. "I don't have a deal, but I have an offer from Warner Brothers.
"At the same time, there are some great touring offers—New Zealand, South Africa, my beloved Scandinavia, Israel and Iran. I would love to sing in Tehran."
One option not on the table is a Smiths reunion. Both Morrissey and his former collaborator and feuding partner, Johnny Marr, have said repeatedly that there is virtually no chance of the band getting back together, no matter how much money they are offered to do so.
Last year, Morrissey revealed the former band members had turned down an offer of $5 million to reunite for the Coachella music festival.
"We are not friends, we don't see each other. Why on earth would we be on a stage together?" he said at the time.
Marr, who currently plays with Modest Mouse, echoed those sentiments in an interview last month, stating: "No amount of money would get me to play with people who don't get along."
At least they agree on something.
