MTV Ditches Laguna for a New Beach

Sorry, Laguna Beach—there's a new Real Orange County in town.

After three seasons, MTV is relocating its teen-focused pseudo-reality show from the wealthy seaside community of Laguna Beach up the coast to the even wealthier seaside community of Newport Beach.

Debuting Aug. 15, Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County centers on the lives of a new cast of characters from Newport Harbor High School, including Chrissy, a senior who's as "smart as she is beautiful," and Clay, a junior whose "humble attitude belies his looks," according to their respective MTV bios.

The network apparently felt it was high time to shake things up after the season three Laguna Beach cast—minus original stars Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari and Stephen Colletti—failed to generate the same levels of viewer interest.

"It has been three years since the Stephen, Lauren and Kristin love triangle drew viewers to the real-life drama of Laguna Beach," said Tony DiSanto, MTV's executive vice president of series development and programming. "Now we are moving up the coast to a new town with new faces and a new high school, but with the same drama of dealing with relationships, cliques, family and friends."

Like Laguna Beach before it, Newport Harbor will focus on the lives of its stars outside of the classroom, trailing them to a whole new set of teen haunts.

"We'd seen all the locations in Laguna, all the hangouts," DiSanto said. "Newport offers something new and different. The boating, the coastline, the homes. You have a different flavor when you watch the show."

Coinciding with the new season's debut, MTV will launch Virtual Newport Harbor, an online destination where fans will be able to virtually interact, hang out, party and shop with the cast.

In other MTV news, Conrad, who was Laguna Beach's first narrator, returns as star of the third season of spinoff series The Hills on Aug. 13. Meanwhile, the Real World kicks off its 19th season in Sydney, Australia on Aug. 8.
