Lance Bass Opens Up About Broadway

Lance Bass Sara Gordon

Today, Lance Bass officially came out—again. This time, it was about his Broadway debut. As Planet Gossip's Marc Malkin reported last week, Lance will play Corny Collins in Hairspray beginning Aug. 14. Our Hollywood Party Girl Sydne Summer sat down with the former ‘N Syncer during a bash at his home in the Hills to get all the musical dish.

How excited are you about Hairspray?
Pretty damn excited. The last four or five years I’ve just been really doing nothing, a lot of waiting, deciding what to do. But this year, I’ve actually taken an active part in doing something. It’s very nice to be working again, especially on Broadway, because I’ve always wanted to do Broadway. I think every entertainer’s dream is to eventually do some kind of theater in New York.

What's the first Broadway show you saw?
The first show I saw on Broadway was Phantom of the Opera. Yeah, that was, like, in 1991.

Are you nervous about moving to New York?
It’s a place I’ve always wanted to live. Some of my best friends live in New York. And my record label’s there, so it’s a city I know fairly well, but I’ve never lived there. So, I’m anxious to really just submerge myself into the culture. Broadway is such a fun little tight family, and it’s kind of like you’re in a little club, which is so nice. The people are so supportive, and you’re all on the same schedule working your ass off! Eight shows a week. You can’t leave at all, so you do have this kind of family thing where we have bizarre showtimes, go out to dinner afterward, and then we go home and sleep.

That means you’re going to put your whole party life on hold for a while.
Exactly. My goal by the end of the run is to be in the best shape of my life—vocally and physically.

So you're going to be like Joey Fatone?  He got so skinny!
I know, he lost so much weight. But yeah, it’s going to be nice, because I’m training every day at the exact same time. It’s the first time I’ve ever had a set schedule in my life. Like a nine-to-five job. I’ve never had that. So, it’s nice to be like, “everyday I can do this” and “everyday I know I will be here.” It kind of scares me, because I’ve never been so dedicated like that, but it will be cool. It will be good for me.

How's your love life?
My love life is going good now. I mean, I’m dating right now, and it’s been amazing. I’m focusing on myself a lot, so the dating life is fun. There are a couple people that I’m dating and enjoying, and we’re all on the same page. So, it’s good.

I'm so happy for you. You're going to have so much fun in New York!
Yes, and New York does have some of the most beautiful people in the world.

And there are more men in New York…
Uh-huh. I've noticed, I’ve definitely noticed. It’s just hard picking out which ones are actually straight or gay, because they all seem so metrosexual!
