Jake Gyllenhaal can sing? Jim Carrey, too?

I sure hope so.

The pair are said to be attached to a new movie adaptation of the classic Broadway musical Damn Yankees.

Originally set during the 1950s, the musical concerns a young Washington Senators fan who sells his soul to the devil for a chance to help his team beat the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will produce for New Line. The producing duo is behind such movie musical hits as Hairspray and Chicago.

While Gyllenhaal and Carrey haven't signed their contracts just yet, the project is being developed with Carrey as the devil and Gyllenhaal as the baseball fan turned winning slugger Joe Hardy.

The show's latest Broadway revival in 1994 featured Jerry Lewis, Victor Garber and Bebe Neuwirth. A film version, directed by George Abbott and Stanley Donen, was released in 1958.

Let's hope Jakey can get girlfriend Reese Witherspoon to play the devil's seductive assistant, Lola. If so, we'd get to watch Ms. Witherspoon perform the legendary "Whatever Lola Wants."

Reps for Gyllenhaal and Carrey declined to comment.
