I'm Sick of Vampires—What's the Next Big Monster?

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ghostbusters, Paranormal Activity, Benicio Del Toro, Wolfman Columbia Pictures; Paramount Pictures; Universal Pictures

Zombies and vampires, while entertaining, are wearing thin. What do we think will be the new trend?
—Alicia Broun Lamar, via Facebook

We do not think when we are the Answer B!tch. We know. For example, we know that werewolves will make a brief stand in the movie theaters in coming weeks, but they will not represent the real trend going forward.

No. No they shall not. No offense, Benicio del Toro. I am sure The Wolfman will be a howl.

Instead, the winning beastie for the next several years is...

...the ghost.

Don't underestimate it just 'cause it's wispy. It's expected to pack a wallop at the box office. In fact the ectoplasmic onslaught has already officially begun with the bona fide success of Paranormal Activity, says Ryan "Rotten" Turek, managing editor of ShockTillYouDrop.com.

"Everything is steering toward the supernatural—ghosts, demons," he says. "There are so many avenues you can take with it, so many different creative decisions you can make—the palpable ghost that you can see, or possessions, or hauntings."

Or just remakes! MGM is working on The Amityville Tapes, which Turek describes as the original Amityville Horror meets Ghost Hunters or Paranormal State.

A project called The Possession of David O'Reilly is being characterized by Turek as a sort of British version of Paranormal Activity. There's much talk of a Poltergeist remake. In Memorium is making the rounds on the indie film fest circuit, and Sony is reportedly gearing up for a Ghostbusters 3.

Now, I'll stop. Before I make Robert Pattinson cry.
