Gut Reaction: Pride Swims, Scream Lasts, I Doze

Pride: Terrence Howard Lionsgate
The folks at Lionsgate were cool enough to get me in early to see Pride tonight in Santa Monica, the new biopic about Jim Ellis and the Philly swim team he started. The film has its moments, a banging soundtrack, and Terrence Howard instantly becomes Ellis, from the moment he is onscreen. I could watch that guy do anything. It's dope that he is in Iron Man, and I'd love to see him and Ed Norton do something together.

Bernie Mac also has an interesting quality about him, from the moment he appears. Just seeing his face makes the audience laugh. He doesn't even do anything, and he tears the house down. In the first scene, he deadpans, "This is not funny"—and it's obviously hilarious. Sounds crazy, but mark my words: Bernie Mac will be nominated for an Oscar someday.

When I got home from the screening, my homies Bud Ice and Chef Sasso were watching Scream, a cemented lock in my personal top 10. That film changed the game. It made a ton of money, brought back an entire teen-slasher genre, launched some careers (Rose McGowan, Jamie Kennedy, Matthew Lillard) and revived others (Wes Craven). Nowadays the horror flicks are so gruesome and intense, but Scream was campy and cheesy and just a lot of fun. Real significant film for me growing up.

Sandra Bullock JA001/ZBP/ZumaPress.com

I fell asleep to last year's Best Picture, Crash. I've got upcoming interviews with its stars Howard, Sandy Bullock, and Michael "I was robbed for WTC" Peña. So email me any questions you might have. Peace!

P.S. Get well soon, Jamal Crawford. We miss you already.
