Disney Goes Couture—and the Princesses Are Oh So Pleased

RSVPs:  Denise Richards, Nicole Richie, Adam Sandler
When:  May 31
Where:  Quincy Jones’ Estate

Once upon a time, in the faraway land of Bel-Air, a music mogul and an actress had a daughter who loved princesses. The little girl grew up and created an exclusive jewelry line based on Disney’s tiara-topped lovelies. The young woman is Kidada Jones, daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton. And today, she has turned her daddy’s home into a princess-pampering party for the Kidada for Disney Couture Collection Launch.

A Magical Palace Welcoming
After a long drive up into the hills, I enter the gates of Quincy Jones’ castle. The music king’s home is closed off to guests, but his grounds have been transformed into a girlie getaway. Pink crystals cover the carpeted tent, and sugarplum-fairy trees line glass cases filled with Kidada’s jewelry. “It’s very feminine without being saccharine. It has a little bit of an edge,” her actress sister, Rashida Jones, says of the line, which will be available June 5 exclusively at Ron Herman at Fred Segal Melrose, before expanding two weeks later to many other specialty boutiques.

The jewelry is indeed inspired by Disney’s princesses. There are charms of Snow White’s apple and the Queen’s mirror, crown bangles and rings, and leather-wrap bracelets with charms based on Alice in Wonderland and Cinderella. Nicole Richie, Bijou Phillips and Monet Mazur all pick out the Castle necklace, a $75 golden chain with a princess castle—just like the one at Disneyland.

“The thing I love about this is it reminds you of when you were a little girl,” Nip/Tuck’s Sanaa Lathan tells me in her red Express dress. “You can still be a woman and yet have that playful innocence.” She’s right. Normally sultry Denise Richards looks fresh and playful in the jewelry. Though she has a nanny with her, she holds daughter Sam’s hand and totes Lola on her hip the entire day. No wonder she was able to lose her baby weight so fast.

Picture-Perfect Moments
After Adam Sandler’s little girl, Sadie, takes a picture with Princess Jasmine, Denise brings her daughters over. They look like storybook characters themselves in matching tulle skirts and pink Crocs. They even act like princesses! “Do you want to get your nails painted?” Denise asks. I see fine blond hair shaking yes, and one second later, the cuties are at the manicure station.

Rumer Willis is also getting her nails done. She’s looking slimmer than ever, so I ask if she has any diet tips, aside from good genes. “I run around,” Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ daughter tells me. “I work at Marc Jacobs, and running back and forth between the storeroom and the store has definitely helped.” When she’s not working, the 19-year-old insists that even though the tabloids say differently, she doesn’t party that much. “I actually like hanging out with my friends at home and going bowling or something like that,” she says. Good thing, considering L.A.’s recent nightclub crackdown.

A’s from the Q
I grab a cherry cocktail made of VeeV vodka and First Blush juices next to the music-impresario host himself. He’s talking to a man about all the recent starlet drama and says back in his day, he did worse things with Ray Charles—there just weren’t any gossip reporters to leak it. What makes Quincy so cool is he’s real. He understands kids will be kids, but he also knows the importance of good parenting. No wonder he raised such successful daughters: One has the coveted job of designing for Disney, and the other is an actress on the hit show The Office. “Quincy and Peggy are amazing parents, and we are very lucky,” Rashida says of how she and her sister turned out so normal. Hear that, Dina Lohan? Parenting is important.

Fairy Tales Do Come True
I catch up with Maria Menounos, who’s snacking on royal hors d’oeuvres prepared by superstar chef Akasha Richmond. “I never wanted to be a princess," she says. “I grew up Greek, so I didn’t know what Disney princesses were. I didn’t even speak English until the second grade. I wanted to be with animals.” Maria sure doesn’t seem to mind being with princesses now. She even stays to have her makeup touched up at the Goldie cosmetics station.

Kim Kimble, Amy Smart Lisa Rose/JPI

Across the way, Amy Smart gets a fabulous regal updo from hairstylist Kim Kimble. Even Samantha Ronson gets her hair done by a stylist from Byron Williams' salon when she’s finished dejaying. I’m jealous, so before I leave, I have my locks styled by Chris McMillan hairstylist Mara Roszak. I could really get used to this royal treatment.

But honestly, the best part is watching girls from the L.A. chapter of the Boys and Girls Club of America. Quincy welcomed the teens into his home, and they're ecstatic to be taking pictures with the celebrity guests and getting pampered at the various stations. It is truly a happily-ever-after ending to a princess-perfect party.
