Debbie Does (Not) Do Xanadu

There's nothing like a great brainstorm. I had a terrific one a couple of days ago. There I was loafing on my couch, admiring the two beautiful bottles of Electric Youth perfume that I own (and use sparingly). Suddenly, one of my favorite songs off the Xanadu soundtrack came on. Yes, it was "Suddenly" by Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richards. Oh, Xanadu, I will never get enough of you! A place where nobody dared to go—a Gene Kelly spiritual, cross-generational bar—and you went there!

And then it hit me: Xanadu the musical is opening on Broadway in May. Tony Roberts is stepping into Gene Kelly's soft shoes, which is beyond awesome casting. Kerry Butler, a youngling Broadway vet, is playing Kira. And that's fine. But wouldn't it have been just awesome if Debbie Gibson tap-danced and rollerskated onto the stage instead?

Yes, I know it's "Deborah." Whatever.

Lo and behold, I totally ran into Deborah a few hours later. No really, I did. So, I told her what I was thinking. "It came up," she said, with this reluctant smile, the kind of smile that says I-want-to-say-more-but-I-can't say more, shaking me off as I asked for more.

"It came up...for a minute...and then it went away. That's all I can say."

And all I can say is that it's too bad.

Okay. Need to go dance around the apartment to "Magic."
