Da Brat Busted for Rum "Punch"
Da Brat needs to rethink her idea of trick-or-treating.
The "Ghetto Love" rapper was arrested for apparently living up to her moniker during some post-Halloween celebrating at a Jermaine Dupri-owned nightspot in suburban Atlanta. Police say Da Brat cracked a cocktail waitress on the head with a rum bottle following a heated exchange.
According to Mekka Parish, a spokeswoman with the DeKalb County Police Department, witnesses told investigators the 24-year-old server "accidentally bumped" Da Brat as she walked through Studio 72's VIP lounge, and the two "engaged in a little scuffle of some pushing and arguing."
"The waitress walked away, and moments later Da Brat hit her in the face with a rum bottle," said Parish.
The victim, whose name was not released, suffered swelling to the forehead, where the bottle struck, and deep cuts on her cheek after the glass shattered. She was taken by a friend to a nearby hospital, treated and released.
The Chicago-born emcee, whose real name is Shawntae Harris, was taken into custody without incident at the scene at approximately 1:20 a.m. She remains jailed on a charge of felony aggravated assault.
Parish said a judge will decide whether to grant bail, and a hearing could happen as early as this evening.
There was no immediate comment from Da Brat's label, Arista Records.
This isn't the Limelite, Luv & Niteclubz performer's first run-in with Atlanta's Finest.
In 2000, Da Brat was nabbed for allegedly pistol-whipping a woman who refused her entourage's orders to leave the VIP lounge at the Chili Pepper nightclub in the city's trendy Buckhead district.
She was charged with felony aggravated assault and ended up later pleading guilty to a reduced count of misdemeanor reckless conduct. She was sentenced to one year of probation, ordered to pay $1,000 restitution and served 80 hours of community service.
Da Brat recently has been making the reality-TV rounds, appearing on the fourth season of The Surreal Life and the fifth season of the Celebrity Fit Club, in which she had a beef with Dustin "Screech" Diamond.
