Bo Diddley on the Mend

If you thought he was going meekly, well then, you don't know Diddley.

Four days after being stricken by a stroke, rock 'n' roll legend Bo Diddley's condition is steadily improving, according to manager and longtime friend Margo Lewis.

Although he's still having trouble speaking, Lewis said she was "encouraged" by Diddley's condition, but adds that it's too early to know whether he'll be able to perform again.

The 78-year-old singer-songwriter, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, became disoriented Saturday night during a concert at Harrah's Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He managed to travel to Omaha, Nebraska, but at the airport his health worsened and he was taken by ambulance to Creighton University Medical Center. Diddley was placed in intensive care and listed in "guarded" condition with elevated blood pressure and glucose levels.

Lewis says the Originator suffered no physical disability and has been able to move around. However, the stroke affected the left side of his brain, hampering his speech and speech recognition.

Diddley, whose birth name is Ellas Bates, is on track to be released from the ICU within a few days, the manager says, but doctors however have not indicated how long the "Who Do You Love?" purveyor will remain hospitalized.

As it as, a monthlong tour of the Midwest and United Kingdom that was supposed to kick off on Sunday has now been scrapped.

With his trademark twang from his trusty, custom-made rectangular-bodied guitar, the rhythm and bluesman is generally considered one of the founders of rock and roll. His eponymous beat drove such classics as "Bo Diddley," "Say Man" and "Hey Good Lookin' " and influenced generations of rockers, including Buddy Holly, the Rolling Stones, U2, David Bowie and the Clash. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

In 2004, Diddley ranked 20th on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The next year, Uncut magazine ranked the 1958 release of Diddley's self-titled debut album as one of the "100 Music, Movie & TV Moments That Changed the World."
