All Paul Needs Is Love

She loves you, Paul McCartney. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

The Cute Beatle announced Thursday that Heather Mills, his steady gal-pal of the last two years, has accepted his marriage proposal.

McCartney popped the question Monday during a getaway in Britain's Lake District. No nuptial date has been set, but the couple say they will tie the knot "sometime next year." McCartney sealed the deal with an Indian sapphire and diamond ring he bought during a trip to the subcontinent earlier this year.

"Paul and Heather said today they would like to thank their relatives and friends for all the great support they have shown them since they met two years ago," reads a statement from McCartney's London office.

McCartney, 59, dropped out of the public eye following the harrowing 1998 breast-cancer death of his first wife, Linda, whom he called his "best friend" and "soulmate." The two had been constant companions for 30 years and the rocker even admitted to contemplating suicide in the dark days following her passing. But, after recording Run Devil Run in 1999, he said his life had "started to get a bit brighter."

Now he has someone else to sing silly love songs to.

Mills, 33, is more than a quarter-century younger than the AARP-eligible McCartney--heck, she wasn't even born when Paul, John, George and Ringo were recording "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Yesterday" or Sgt. Pepper's. Now an advocate for the disabled and ardent anti-land-mine activist, the former British swimsuit model lost her leg seven years ago when a police motorcycle struck her as she crossed the street in London.

The couple first hit it off when McCartney helped her record "Voice," a charity single and video for her eponymous foundation, which provides limbs for war victims, and, after incessant hounding by the British press, McCartney officially announced the two were an item in March 2000.

McCartney has three adult children and one stepdaughter from his marriage with Linda. Mills was married for a brief time in 1989 and was engaged to a documentary filmmaker in 1999, but called it off.
