ABC Shows Money the Door
Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. can once again lay exclusive claim to the phrase "Show me the money."
ABC pulled the plug on its William Shatner-hosted game show by the same name Friday and yanked it from the schedule immediately, replacing it with America's Funniest Home Videos.
The network initially said it planned to air the seven remaining episodes that it had already completed, but later decided to shelve them.
The cancellation comes just one week after ABC announced that it had ordered six additional episodes of the show to air in January.
Show Me the Money averaged just 7.1 million viewers in its 8 p.m. Wednesday slot, pulling down its season average to just 7.5 million.
The now defunct show featured contestants facing off against one another by answering trivia questions. After each answer, the contestant would choose from among 13 dancing girls onstage, each of whom would be holding a scroll with a dollar amount to be added or subtracted from the contestant's total, depending whether they answered correctly or incorrectly.
When properly inspired, Shatner would take the stage to show off a few moves alongside his comely costars. Unfortunately, his soft-shoe apparently wasn't enough to keep the game show paychecks coming.
Luckily, the actor still has another ABC series to pay the bills. Shatner is currently in his third season on Boston Legal, for which he has won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Meanwhile, ABC also turned out the lights on the Taye Diggs crime thriller, Day Break, on Friday after the show pulled in only 3.94 million viewers on its last airing Wednesday, according to Nielsen Media Research. That brought the series down to an average of 5.68 million viewers over the five episodes aired since its Nov. 15 premiere.
The network had pinned its hopes on the series to fill the gap left by Lost during the island drama's lengthy hiatus. Instead, reruns of George Lopez and According to Jim will air in the Wednesday timeslot, at least for the time being.
