"90210" Turns 250, "Party of Five" Hits 100

A case of good news, bad news for Aaron Spelling-related shows.

The überproducer was in a partying mood Wednesday night, celebrating the 250th episode of his Beverly Hills, 90210 at a swanky soiree on Hollywood's Sunset Strip.

"This puts 90210 ahead of Dynasty and Love Boat," Spelling said, toasting his crew and cast (newly returned Luke Perry was there, but the just-departed Jason Priestley was conspicuously absent). "By the end of the year, we'll have more episodes than any other show on television."

But while Aaron and his Fox pals were partying, ABC execs were busy retooling their fall sweeps schedule, benching the network's new take on Spelling's Fantasy Island. (Of course, the new version is produced by Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld and Columbia TriStar, not Spelling.)

The Saturday night Malcolm McDowell starrer will join the the network's new Michael Madsen drama Vengeance Unlimited on the sidelines for the rest of November.

Both latest sweeps victims should return to the network's schedule in December, but of course, the decision doesn't bode well for either series. According to Daily Variety, ABC is unhappy with the direction of the new Island--the net wants flashier guest stars and more input from Sonnenfeld.

As for Vengeance, producer Warner Bros. has yet to receive an additional order for episodes from the network. Vengence has been getting trounced in its Thursday spot, averaging a miserable 2.4 ratings average so far. ABC will fill its time slot with movies.

ABC will also take away Cupid's bow and arrow, but only for one week.

Meanwhile, NBC is considering some shuffling of its own to shore up its faltering Tuesday- and Wednesday-night schedules. The Peacock is apparently leaning toward moving 3rd Rock from the Sun to Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (the Emmy-winning show's fourth move in four years). The network could then move the struggling Encore! Encore! (now on hiatus) into the 8:30 slot. NewsRadio would shift to Encore!'s Tuesday at 8:30 time slot.

Before NBC can move Encore!, however, Paramount must okay it--the producer has an agreement with the network that the show will either air on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Finally, the partying will continue over at Fox tonight. As it did for 90210, the network will throw a big bash for the cast and crew of Party of Five, which is celebrating its 100th show. Not bad for a series that barely survived its first couple of seasons. The milestone episode will air next week.
