"8mm" Up to Snuff
The Nicolas Cage vehicle opened Friday to widely mixed reviews--from generally admiring ones, to unusually disgusted ones. (The Washington Post described 8mm as--ouch--120 minutes of pure torture.)
Cage stars as a private detective hired to find out if a really sick strip of 8mm film (featuring the torture and murder of a young girl) is on the level.
Overall, it was a soft weekend at the movies. The other new major entries--The Other Sister and 200 Cigarettes--proved no match for the Cage brand name.
Other Sister, starring Juliette Lewis as a developmentally disabled young woman, bowed in third place with $6.7 million. Cigarettes, the would-be hip comedy with the would-be hip cast (Ben Affleck, Christina Ricci, etc.), could do no better than $3.6 million for ninth place.
Payback, the Mel Gibson shoot-'em-up, proved its staying power, taking the No. 2 slot with an estimated $6.9 million.
Oscar's Best Picture hopeful Shakespeare in Love managed another Top 10 finish, claiming a reported $4.4 million and seventh place.
Here's a look at the weekend's Top 10, based on preliminary stats:
