Nikki Reed is coming to Ian Somerhalder's defense.

The actress and new mom took to Twitter on Friday to respond to backlash over her husband throwing out her birth control pills. During an interview on Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast this week, the couple revealed that Somerhalder threw away Reed's birth control pills when they decided to have a baby.

Somerhalder then tells a story of how they met up with two of their best friends in Barcelona and they decided they wanted to all have children at the same time.

"And it was just time," Somerhalder said. "But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn't realize that I was gonna go in her purse and take out her birth control and pop them...by the way it was at the beginning of the pack so I had to pop all those suckers out, there was like 25 of them."

Somerhalder then says there's a "six-minute video" where Reed is "freaking out" about it.

After the interview, Somerhalder received major backlash for his actions, but Reed is now responding to critics on Twitter.

"WOMEN'S RIGHTS MATTER, so please don't use false narratives to highlight issues that are truly important!" Reed tweeted before following up with, "We should be talking about these things, but using a funny interview between married ppl &twisting it to perpetuate gossip is irresponsible."

Later on Friday, Reed followed up her tweets with another message. "Dear writer. Here's my note to you on irresponsible journalism," she tweeted along with her message.

"Quote from an article this morning claiming my husband tried to 'force (me) into pregnancy?!' Oh and my favorite line 'That is some unconsented bulls--t right there,'" Reed says, adding a laughing emoji. "My response: Yep. When you actually listen to the podcast (which I'm sure you didn't) you'll hear how 'unforced' I felt. Ha! Also, 'unconsented' bulls--t is you speaking on my behalf in a story admittedly taken out of context for the purpose of stirring up drama WITHOUT my approval. Don't talk about consent to me. And lastly, how dare you try to cast a dark shadow over one of the happiest most memorable days of my life – you're not only disrespecting me but my baby."

Reed's continues, "Oh, and next time you try to stand up for women by writing an article 'about women's rights', try properly conveying the way I felt. It's a shame that this was your way in. You have a platform, write about things that matter by using truthful stories, not gossip. Thanks and goodbye," Reed ended her message with a peace sign emoji.

On Saturday, the couple made a joint statement about the interview on Twitter.

"To anyone who has been affected by the reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry. That is an extremely serious issue, and women's rights is something that is incredibly important to both of us. It is something that is very close to our hearts. We never expected a lighthearted interview we do poking fun at EACH OTHER and how WE chose together to get pregnant, a goofy moment in Barcelona with our two best friends and the anticipation of the start of our journey together as we went from two to three, to turn into something representing a very serious matter."

The statement continues, "However, if this somehow sheds light on a topic that definitely needs mainstream attention, then we are grateful for the unintended consequence. IT's a shame that outlets chose this as their way into a very serious discussion, as we are certainly not qualified to be the faces of this topic. We are two happily married people who chose TOGETHER to have a baby. The end. Love, Nikki and Ian."

Reed announced her pregnancy in May 2017 and the couple welcomed a daughterBodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder, in July.
