When you get a permanent statue of your face in a very public location, your only hope is that it at least resembles you...

Unfortunately for Cristiano Ronaldo, that's not the case with his newest likeness.

Portugal's Madeira International Airport was renamed after the Real Madrid soccer stud in honor of the island being his homeland. The rebrand—the airport is now named Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo—received mixed reviews, but it was overshadowed by the statue that was built along with it.

Not only does the bronzed bust look absolutely nothing like him, it's fairly creepy.

Even more unfortunate, the head sits right outside of the arrivals terminal, so anyone who flies into the airport will pass it.

Despite some criticism surrounding the event (and the statue), Ronaldo was very appreciative for the honor and to the hundreds of people who attended.

"Thank you for being here in my honor. Seeing my name being given to this airport is something very special. Everyone knows that I am proud of my country and especially my home city," he told the crowd, according to the DailyMail. "Thank you very much to the president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque for having had the courage and the firmness to do it."

He also noted, "My friend, I never asked for this, but I'm not a hypocrite, and I'm happy and honored. I know some people do not agree and I know some people who are not here would be happy for this moment.

"I will try to dignify Portugal and especially Madeira with a spirit of sacrifice, dignity and passion," he concluded.
