Tarek and Christina El Moussa may have only announced their split on Monday, but they've been secretly separated for nearly eight months.

In fact, the Flip or Flop stars are living separately and have already started dating other people.

"We decided to separate while we reevaluated the next steps in our married life," the former couple told People magazine for their latest cover story. "We believed this was in the best interests of the children and the best way to determine a path forward."

They continued, "We have both dated other people following the separation, but neither of us is ready to announce anything in terms of another relationship."

Tarek and Christina also announced that they will continue working together.

"We plan to continue our professional life together by being professional, by doing our jobs well, by being prepared and by working hard," they told the publication.

Meanwhile, the couple announced the news of their split earlier this week, telling E! News, "Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage. We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed."

The "misunderstanding" they spoke of was an incident in which Orange County police were called about "a possibly suicidal male with a gun."

According to an incident report obtained by E! News, Christina said Tarek "took a handgun, put it in his backpack and ran outside," hopping over their backyard fence and into the Chino Hills State Park. Eleven police officers and a helicopter eventually tracked him down. They later searched his home where officials found five firearms, which he voluntarily relinquished for 30 days as a precautionary measure.

Now, the couple says Tarek's "intentions were misread."

They told People, "Tarek was going on a hike and took a gun for protection from mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and rattlesnakes."

Tarek and Christina got married in 2009 and have two children togetherTaylor, 6, and Brayden, 15 months—who are their main priority as they figure out their marriage moving forward.

"The most difficult part of the decision to separate was the kids. We want the best for them, and we're doing everything we can to ensure that."
