Imagine waking up to the news that you've just been honored with a Golden Globe Award nomination. Today, that dream was entirely real for a handful of Tinseltown's stars, old and new.
As Anna Kendrick, Laura Dern and Don Cheadle announced this year's honorees, careers were changed for the better. While some stars garnered their first nods to date, others hit significant highs, including Meryl Streep who earned her 30th nomination this year for Florence Foster Jenkins and the most of any star in history so far.
There were clear favorites among the nominees this year, such as La La Land and Manchester by the Sea, both of which collected honors in all of the major categories.
The Edge of Seventeen's Hailee Steinfeld, Rules Don't Apply's Lily Collins, Moonlight's Naomie Harris, Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds and Atlanta's Donald Gloverscored their first Golden Globe nominations while stars like Transparent's Jeffrey Tambor and Veep's Julia Louis-Dreyfus were named again after years of consecutive nods.
Whether they're celebrating for the first time or with a Golden Globe statue already in their hand, Hollywood was in high spirits Monday morning. Here's how your favorite stars reacted to the happy news:
Sterling K. Brown: "HFPA! Y'all crazy for this one… and I couldn't be more grateful! Thank you for such a tremendous honor! What a wonderful way to finish off the year...wow! In recognition that no one gets to this place in their career by themselves, I have to first thank my wife and two children for giving me such a clear purpose for being. Ryan, Andrew, Amaré… you make this all worthwhile! Jennifer Wiley Stockton… thank you for doing so much, so that I can stay focused on the task at hand. Let us never part. Michael Geiser, you are unsung, sir! (And if you erase this from my statement, we'll have words)! Love you, buddy. To my agents at Innovative Artists, especially my man David Rose, thank you for giving your boy all the support he could ask for. St. Louis, I rep you 'til the day I die! To all my family and friends there, thank you for making your boy feel special. #ChocolateCardinal y'all know I luvs you! To my artistic family from NYC, including (but not limited to) my friends and faculty at the grad acting program at NYU, thank you for keeping your boy nourished and fed. Literally and spiritually. Namaste"
Rachel Bloom: "WOW. Once again, you have made my dreams come true, @goldenglobes. I and everyone at #CrazyExGirlfriend are BEYOND grateful!!!"
Matt Damon: "Congratulations to our incredible crew and a deep thank you to Kenny Lonergan and the entire cast who poured their hearts and souls into this, and thank you as well to the HFPA for championing a little movie like ours."
Noah Schnapp: "I am so excited! Stranger Things received a Golden Globe nomination!! Thank you HFPA for this honor. I am especially thankful to the Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and the entire Netflix team for having given me this amazing opportunity to be a part of something so special."
Brian Tyree Henry: "Atlanta!!!!! We were nominated for a Golden Globes Award. Thank you HFPA! I am beyond honored and can't thank everyone enough!!!! This is so dope! Seriously. The love we've been shown this year is unlike any other."
Natalie Portman:"I'm so honored to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I had such a beautiful experience making this film with the most wonderful cast and crew, and particularly with our great director, Pablo Larrain, that it feels like icing on the cake to be nominated."
Kerry Washington: "Now, more than ever, we must champion stories that highlight our bravest voices in times of adversity. As an actress and a producer I am so grateful to the HFPA for acknowledging Confirmation in this way."
Nicole Kidman: "This nomination is even more emotional and I'm more grateful than ever before. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!"
Riz Ahmed: "Thank you HFPA! I'm absolutely thrilled to be counted amongst this year's nominees. I'm deeply indebted to Steve Zaillian, Richard Price, HBO, to all the cast and crew of The Night Of for their dedication in bringing this timely story to life, and all those who shared their stories of prison and prejudice with me in researching this role. It was an honour to portray Nas, and through him the untold stories of so many."
Lin-Manuel Miranda: "Gracias. Merci. Grazie. Danke sehr. Mahalo. Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this tremendous honor. Congratulations to my fellow nominees. Over two years ago, I was lucky enough to have been given my dream job, writing songs for a Disney animated film, alongside the amazing Opetaia Foa'i & Mark Mancina. Today, for Moana to be recognized for what we created is truly beyond comprehension. ‘How Far I'll Go' not only embodies the spirit of our heroine but the central lesson from the film—dream big, listen to your gut, don't give up, never forget where you came from, and one day you might just save the world."
Gael García Bernal: "I'm so thrilled I was nominated for Mozart in the Jungle and that the show was nominated. I'm equally as thrilled Neruda was nominated for Best Foreign Film. I'm so lucky to be a part of both projects. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press."
Liev Schreiber: "What a great wake up call...Thank you to all the writers on Ray Donovan, Ann Biderman, David Hollander, David Nevins, and the extraordinary cast of actors who carry me through every season of this show. Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for continuing to support our show and for giving me another great excuse to play dress up with the boys. We are thrilled!"
Regency Enterprises/20th Century Fox
Lily Collins: "I've never felt so shocked, honored, and proud. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to my fearless leader and mentor Warren Beatty, the Hollywood Foreign Press, and to all those involved with Rules Don't Apply. Sharing this moment with my mom sitting on our couch in the dark is something I'll never forget. It's a complete dream come true. I still can't breathe."
Evan Rachel Wood: "Being a part of Westworld is such an honor. Dolores is the greatest character I've ever played. I'm so thankful to everyone on the show and that these groundbreaking complex roles are being written for women and even more grateful that the Hollywood Foreign Press is recognizing me and the show for it. Thank you."
20th Century Fox
Rami Malek: "I'm incredibly grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for recognizing me in this group of distinguished and accomplished actors. I'm thrilled to be sharing this moment with my co-star and fellow nominee Christian Slater. I am so thankful for the brilliant mind of Sam Esmail, USA Network, Universal Cable Productions, and the exceptionally gifted cast, crew, and writers of Mr. Robot."
Ryan Reynolds: "I'm honored to be nominated by the HFPA for a Golden Globe. And possibly more honored the film itself is being recognized this way. As we speak, the entire Deadpool team is engaged in a grotesque, early morning tickle-fight."
Courtney B. Vance: "So grateful to be considered with all of theses great actors and projects. I thank Ryan Murphy, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, and all of our wonderful cast & crew!"
Caitriona Balfe: "Thank you so much to the HFPA for this nomination. I am grateful everyday that I get to portray a woman who is strong-willed, confident, intelligent, empowered and simply unforgettable. While Outlander is a brilliant period show, Claire represents so many qualities of a 20th Century modern day woman, someone who is forging her own path, fighting for what she believes and doing so with integrity. I am thrilled to be nominated among such an amazing and talented group of women."
Murray Close/STX Productions
Hailee Steinfeld: "I am overcome with excitement and joy to be nominated for The Edge of Seventeen. We set out to make a film that would resonate with men and women of all ages because the message of self-acceptance and embracing your truth is universal. Contrary to the reality that I face as a young actress on a daily basis, Eo17 isn't a film about a teenage girl wrestling with her identity and self-worth because of the influence of social media defining her popularity. Instead, it's an anthem for self-acceptance and I'm so grateful to Jim Brooks and Kelly Fremon-Craig for granting me the opportunity to play such a complex and unlikely heroine."

Amy Adams "Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association who have always been so incredibly supportive of me throughout my career. I'm really honored to be recognized for Arrival, a film I so deeply loved working on. Thank you to Eric for his brilliant script, Jeremy for being an amazing partner and Denis for his incredible guidance and capturing the true heart and soul of this film. I'd also like to congratulate Tom Ford and Aaron Taylor Johnson for their Nocturnal Animals nominations."
Jessica Chastain"I'm thrilled to be acknowledged in this talented peer group with such amazing actresses. I would not be here without the brilliant direction of John Madden. Thank you to EuropaCorp for making such a daring film, particularly now, and thank you to the HFPA for this honor."

Octavia Spencer "I am deeply humbled to be nominated for a Golden Globe for playing this particular role. The women of Hidden Figures story are hidden no more. Thank you HFPA."
Dan Fogelman: "What a morning. The last time my phone started ringing like that at 5:30 AM I think my grandfather had died. This continues to be the wildest, craziest, and most rewarding ride for all of us. I'm very grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our show, as well as Mandy and Chrissy - two insanely talented women who are as easy to root for as they are to write for. I'm incredibly proud of every single member of this cast and crew - they don't all get to put on tuxes and drink champagne and make out with movie stars (that's what happens next, right?) but they kill themselves to make our show special and I know our set is going to be buzzing this morning."
Julia Louis-Dreyfus: "Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Russian hackers that made our nominations possible."
Meryl Streep: "AAAAGGGGHHHH!"

Viola Davis"I am so grateful to be recognized for the work brought to life by August Wilson. Thank you to the HFPA for honoring this story of the human experience."
Viggo Mortensen: "It's a privilege to have participated in a great ensemble story like Captain Fantastic, one that has steadily earned its place among the most admired movies of the year by virtue of the passionate response it has received from audiences everywhere. Matt Ross has made that rare kind of film that prompts people to look at the world with fresh eyes, to laugh and cry and think. I'm very proud to be a part of it."
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: "Waking up to this news in an early dawn light made going into the darkness to bring this character alive all the more worthwhile. I'm truly grateful to the HFPA for recognizing the transformation I went through to create this role with Tom Ford. This is all very overwhelming and exciting. It's such a tremendous honor."

I'm also thrilled to see that my co-stars - up and comer Meryl Streep and the always peerless Simon Helberg - have also been nominated. My thanks again to the HFPA for their support."
Casey Affleck"Huge thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for this prestigious honor. It will actually be my first time attending the Golden Globes and I've been working for more than 20 years, so this moment isn't lost on me. I'm so happy for the recognition this morning given to our incredible writer and director Kenneth Lonergan and to Michelle Williams, and for our entire cast and crew. It's really meaningful for our film. Thank you."

Hugh Laurie: "It's an incredible honor to be nominated in the last ever Golden Globes."
Bob Odenkirk: "Blown away again to be recognized in the sea of excellence that is TV drama right now. I'm going to take it as a compliment for every aspect of Better Call Saul. The writing, the entire cast around me and everyone involved in the production of it. I really love getting to know the empathetic character Jimmy McGill, the man behind the not so empathetic, rapscallion Saul Goodman. Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press!"
Sarah Jessica Parker: "This is such delightful news. I'm deeply honored to be included among women whose work I admire so much. Especially thrilled given all the impressive and affecting performances by women in television this past season. I've been granted a wonderful opportunity to return to television in an fantastically challenging, exquisitely written role I love and the privilege of working alongside people who inspire daily, most especially Thomas Haden Church. I thank the HFP for their kind consideration and for the great early morning surprise."
Isabelle Huppert: "I am extremely grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to have honored "Elle" twice. I am so happy for Paul Verhoeven. "Elle" is a film deeply close to my heart. And from the bottom of that same heart I am saying to you: thank you, thank you, thank you! (Merci, merci, merci!)"
Andrew Garfield: "I am so incredibly moved by the HFPA and their recognition of this film and my work, especially considering the remarkably strong caliber of performances this year. It's an honor to stand with actors like Denzel Washington who have inspired me since I was old enough to watch movies. I'm very proud of Hacksaw Ridge and I share this with Bill Mechanic, David Permut and Mel who led the charge on this project with great vision, humility, integrity and love. I dedicate this nomination and my work to the incomparable Desmond Doss and all those who sacrifice themselves in the service of the protection and freedom of others. He is a profound symbol of healing and compassion for the times we are in."

This film was a labor of love for everyone involved, and is also about a man who truly exemplified love and goodness. It's thrilling to see Andrew Garfield nominated today since he is the beating heart of our film. I share any honor received for this film and for myself with every actor and every crew member that came to the set each day giving their all to honor the story of our brave veterans, and most especially Desmond Doss, a true hero."
Jonah Hill: "Thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I am incredibly grateful for their nomination and honored to be considered amongst all of these brilliant actors and their outstanding performances. Thank you to Todd, Bradley and Miles."

Keri Russell: "While changing puked on baby sheets.... I find this out! Thank you HFPA for adding some glamour to the day....Thrilled."
Gina Rodriguez: "Thank you to the HFPA for always recognizing new and unbelievable talent regardless of color or culture. The HFPA changed my life three years ago and they continue to do so for so many talented artists and projects out there. How wonderful it is to see an awards show so full of diversity, and not just for diversity sake, but because of the phenomenal performances. I feel beyond blessed and humbled to have been one of their discoveries. It's 10pm in Thailand and I think we are going out for a celebratory beer and tacos. Yup. I said tacos in Thailand, wish me luck!"

The best thing about this though is that my mom is going to be really f-ing happy."
Claire Foy: "I am so delighted by the nominations The Crown has received today! The whole experience has been wonderful. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to bring Peter Morgan's Princess Elizabeth to life; she is a gift of a role and a challenge I am so grateful for - a young woman trying to navigate a path through an extraordinary situation. I must thank the HFPA for this nomination, it's such an honour. More than anything I am so happy that people have enjoyed the show the way they have and recognised the hard work of the truly brilliant ensemble cast and crew. I would also like to congratulate John and everyone on The Crown for their nominations today."
Jill Soloway: "The Globes always lead the industry in recognizing the new, the subversive, the wild frontrunners. What an honor it was for me to wake up and see that TRANSPARENT continues to be part an important and lauded part of our culture. How thrilling, also that Jeffrey Tambor's marvelous and gorgeous portrayal of Maura Pfefferman is getting love. In this post-Trump America, intersectional voices are the future of the taking our power against patriarchy. I am especially so excited to see Issa Rae and Donald Glover nominated for how they are reinventing artistic protagonism as artists and actors. This morning I'm on the set on a mountainside with the I LOVE DICK cast and crew in Marfa, Texas and we're celebrating for Amazon and Topple. Artmaking -- and the revolutionary power of art as a method of political explosiveness -- are my rallying cry and my current reason to live these days. This morning puts so much more gasoline in my engine."
