Pitch didn't make headlines like creator Dan Fogelman's other new fall 2016 show (it's called This Is Us, you may have heard of it?), but it was also a bright spot in this season's new TV lineup. The drama followed Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), the first female pitcher in Major League Baseball, as she dealt with her newfound role model status as a history-making athlete.
The early episodes featured some strikingly shot baseball games, thanks to MLB's involvement, but also delved deep into Ginny's relationships—with her no-good brother, Will (UnREAL season two's BJ Britt); with her agent, Amelia (Ali Larter); with her longtime friend and teammate, Blip (Mo McRae); with her BFF, Blip's wife Evelyn (Meagan Holder); and with the team's all-star catcher, Mike (Mark-Paul Gosselaar).
Mike and Ginny, in particular, have grown closer over the course of the first season—first as mentor/mentee, then as something more. In the penultimate episode, the duo shared an electric almost-kiss, and in the finale, they spent most of their time dodging actually discussing what happened.
In the meantime, Mike reconciled with his ex-wife, Rachel (played by JoAnna Garcia Swisher), and Ginny finally allowed herself to let her guard down with the tech billionaire who's been pursuing her, Noah (Tyler Hilton).
When Mike and Ginny finally discussed the state of their relationship—on the mound just an inning away from Ginny pitching a no-hitter, by the way—they reiterated that if they were going to be teammates, they had to keep their relationship in the friend zone.
But that doesn't mean the show's first (and hopefully not only!) season ended without drama. Ginny told her "entrepreneur" brother to get lost and stop trying to steal her money, Evelyn told Blip she didn't want another child and wanted to pursue her own career instead, Amelia left town, and Ginny—in the closing moments of her eighth inning with no hits, injured herself fielding a ball.
Will Ginny be able to recover from her injury, or will it cut her career short? Fingers crossed we'll be able to find out next year and Fox will renew the show despite lackluster ratings.
