Move over lip gloss, lip art is having a moment.
You might have noticed your Instagram feed blowing up with over-the-top lip art designs that look more like mini-masterpieces than wearable lipstick looks. Intricate designs (like ombré or rose-gold embossed lips) might score you a bunch of likes online, but to help you to rock it IRL, we called in the big guns: celeb makeup artist Mai Quynh.
Mai's worked with a ton of A-listers (Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone, Kristen Stewart and Chloe Grace Moretz—to name a few), so she has a few pointers when it comes to lip art you can wear (without freaking out over messing it up every time you talk).
For a real-girl take on the popular ombré lip trend, keep it simple with just two key liquid lipstick colors. To achieve a subtle and pretty fusion of color, select one dark shade, like Lorac Pro Liquid Lipstick in Black Cherry, and one lighter one, like Lorac Pro Liquid Lipstick in Plum Brown.
Pro Tip: Just make sure you're using liquid lipstick (so it doesn't budge), and be sure that both shades are in the same color family (to keep the finished look cohesive instead of wild and costume-y).
And if you want to give flashy rose-gold lips a whirl? Start with a natural-looking, rosy lip color, like Lorac Alter Ego Lipstick in CEO, as a base. To add a flicker of shimmer, dust a highlighter, like Lorac Light Source Illuminating Highlighter in Daylight, over top, dabbing a little extra on the cupid's bow.
Pro Tip: Pump it up with an extra layer of shimmer for a GNO after-party, or keep it light-handed for a business meeting during the day.
