The key to good makeup is good skin, and it all starts with the prep.

That's right, if you want to look as fresh as Emma Stone at the Denver Film Festival presentation of La La Land, take note from master makeup artist Mai Quynh.

"Emma has amazing porcelain skin, and her hair was styled in a modern '40s set, so I wanted to keep her skin fresh and young while pairing it with a beautiful glamorous red lip," noted the beauty pro. "Her Chanel dress helped inspire our direction."

"To recreate this look, it's important to have fresh skin to keep it modern and not so dated and retro. Also, go with a bright red lip. It looks more youthful than a dark red shade," she added.

The good news is that once you put in the work for moisturized skin, the makeup is pretty easy to achieve (it's also the reason you won't be dry and flaky in colder weather). The bad news? You may not be able to afford all the prestige products used to get Emma's look (the products mentioned below ring in at a cool $413.50).

But for a cooler winter color palette everyone can attain, think less bronzed and more passion red. It will add a fiery flush to your cheeks and lips and will look divine against your skin this season.

SKIN

Step 1: Prep you skin with a few drops of face serum, like Decleor Aromessence Neroli Hydrating Oil Serum. "It keeps her skin dewy and luminous, which is perfect for the red carpet," Mai noted.

Step 2: Layer on a rich moisturizing cream, like Decleor Hydra Floral 24HR Moisture Activator Rich Cream.

Step 3: Dab on a hydrating eye serum directly under your eyes to avoid makeup from caking.

Step 4: Prep lips with a nourishing lip balm for a flake-free pout.

EYES

Step 1: Using a neutral eye shadow palette, like Dior 5 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette in Montaigne, blend a light cream shade all over eyelids with a flat shadow brush.

Step 2: Next, swipe the medium taupe brown shade to the outer corner of the eye, blending it into the crease. (Pro tip: Smudge the same color along the lower lashline, too.)

Step 3: For the top lashline, lightly smudge the dark chocolate brown shade from corner to corner to add some depth along your top lashes.

Step 4: Add generous amount mascara to draw attention to your eyes. " I added two coats of Lancôme Definicils Mascara in Black," shared the pro.

FACE

Step 1: Apply a full-coverage foundation, like Chantecaille Future Skin Foundation, with a damp BeautyBlender sponge.

Step 2: Also use a damp BeautyBlender sponge to dot concealer under your eyes and wherever else is needed.

Step 3: Set you face makeup with a loose powder, like using YSL Soufflé D'Eclat loose powder in #1, to nix oil and shine.

Step 4: Add a pop of pink to your cheeks to brighten your face. "I brushed on Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour in Rose Petal to the apples of her cheeks," informed the MUA.

Step 5: Finish the look with a coral red lip color, like YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in 203 Rouge Rock, for that passionate look you're after.

Voilà!
