They're baaaaack!
The upcoming La La Land marks Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's third film together.
The musical movie (yup, it's a musical!) screened tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival and received three standing ovations.
Stone, 27, plays an aspiring actress in Hollywood who falls in love with a jazz pianist, played by Gosling, 35. Their singing and dancing is pure magic. The film is director Damien Chazelle's follow-up to his Oscar-winning Whiplash.
"We made two films together and now three, and so you know it's great to work with people you know," Gosling told me on the red carpet at the Princess of Whales Theatre. "I think it brings the best out of them because you know one another, and you are able to help each other in a way that you can't if you're strangers."
At a Q&A following the screening, Gosling joked, "Well, I like working with Emma because I think she's secretly Canadian."
Stone did a little shimmy on the stage while the audience erupted with laughter and applause, knowing full well Gosling is from Canada. "That's why we get along so well," he said. "She's wildly apologetic for no reason at all."
When I asked Stone what she loved about her co-star, she beamed, "I just think he's great. I mean, he's a fantastic actor and it's just so much fun to work with him and that's kind of all there is to it, really. It's no more exciting than that or less exciting than that."
She did admit that she might have accidently bruised Mr. Gosling while filming their dance numbers. "I probably kicked Ryan a few times," Stone said.
Both love that La La Land is unapologetically romantic. "I think what Damien wrote is really beautiful and nostalgic and sweet," Stone said. "It's nice to be part of something that hopefully gives people joy for two hours. A lot has been happening."
La La Land is in theaters on Dec. 2.
