It's a mod, mod world.

If you know who the 1960s supermodel Twiggy is, you're probably a fan of mod-era clothing. These days, however, it's hard to channel the look without feeling like you're going to a costume party. While rocking brightly-colored shift dresses and knee-high pleather boots in your everyday life is out of the question, it doesn't mean that you should avoid the mod trend altogether. To pull off the trend in a cool-girl way, stick to one key mod-inspired piece. For instance, a short-sleeve turtleneck in a neutral color like black is an easy way to fold the style into your existing wardrobe.

If you're feeling bold and want to sport a full-on mod look, it's definitely possible. For the office especially, just be sure to avoid too many loud colors in one outfit. A neutral color scheme (think shades of brown, camel, black and white) will do just that. A color-blocked pleather skirt and knee-high boots will transport you to the ‘60s, but the toned-down palette will feel modern instead of costume-y.

Another way to give your look a mod edge is to stick to a monochromatic palette. Pair a black turtleneck with black bottoms, like fashion-girl-approved wide-leg culottes. This way, you can add drama in other ways with your accessories. Wide-brim sunglasses and a bright red bag will give your outfit a playful weekend vibe. Alternatively, if you want to dress it up, just add strappy heels and a beaded clutch.

To give your weekend brunch look a mod-but-girly flavor, layer your neutral turtleneck under a fit-and-flare dress. The turtleneck will peek out just a touch, keeping the focus on the feminine, patterned dress. To complete the ladylike look, simply add classy accessories like oversized sunglasses, ankle-strap heels, a gold-plated statement watch and a traditional leather satchel.

There's something about adding a trench coat to your look that makes you feel a little mysterious. Do it in a snakeskin, or another animal print, to give your look a modern edge. Play up the print with a coordinating cross-body bag and cool booties. Underneath, keep it simple with the turtleneck and a black A-line skirt. And don't forget the tinted sunglasses.

There's a reason that the model-off-duty uniform is always jeans and a T-shirt: It never goes out of style. If you want to give your weekend uniform a mod twist, swap out the cotton tee for a short-sleeve turtleneck. You can stick with skinny jeans or pop in a pair of flare-leg denim to switch it up. Simple accessories like oversized glasses, a satchel and lace-up pumps keep the look streamlined but not basic.
