Actor makes light of his 1988 sex tape scandal and character in St. Elmo's Fire

Rob Lowe knows how to laugh at himself.

But that goes without saying, given that the actor willingly signed up to participate in his very own Comedy Central Roast. In the latest promo for Lowe's pre-filmed insult fest, the Parks and Recreation alum makes light of that infamous 1988 sex tape scandal that all but flushed his reputation down the toilet. Pair this with his saxophone-playing character in the 1985 flick St. Elmo's Fire, and you have self-deprecating gold.

In the video, the 52-year-old is seen setting up a camera in his bedroom wearing nothing but his birthday suit. Lowe then appears to engage in a particularly NSFW activity, but upon turning around it's revealed that he's merely jamming out on the sax. Oh, Rob.

For those unfamiliar with the aforementioned incident known as one of Hollywood's first major sex tape scandals, Lowe was regrettably thrust into the spotlight after footage surfaced of the celeb having sex with two women in an Atlanta hotel room, one of whom was 16-years-old. The West Wing star never faced criminal charges, as the legal age of consent in Georgia is 16.

Fast forward a few decades later, and Rob is set to become the latest victim in the popular comedy series. Lowe endured about two hours of a verbal smackdown from a number of fellow stars and close pals that included roast master Jeffrey Ross, singer Jewel, NFL star Peyton Manning, Rob Riggle, David Spade, SNL's Pete Davidson, comedian Nikki Glaser, Lowe's The Outsiders co-star Ralph Macchio, British comedian Jimmy Carr and ultra-conservative politico Ann Coulter.

Nothing was off limits during the roast, as the group mocked Lowe for the sex tape as well as his past substance abuse problems, his string of failed television series and his pretty boy looks. The roasters also went after each other with jokes about 9/11, AIDS, Hitler and more.

"I'm just glad there's something left of me," Lowe told reporters Saturday evening after the roast. "I think I'm in tatters still up there on that stage. But they were all so funny and I just love a good joke."

The Comedy Central Roast of Rob Lowe airs on Comedy Central on Labor Day at 10 p.m.
