The world has witnessed one of the most elaborate roller coasters ever when it comes to the romance of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

For years, fans have watched these young stars go from blissful love to bitter breakups, over and over and over again. And just when we thought the Jelena chapter of everyone's lives was completely over, it was sparked back to life yet again this week when Gomez responded to Bieber's photo with rumored new girl Sofia Richie.

So, what is it exactly with these two? Why can't the Biebs and Selena quit each other?

Well, a source tells E! News, "They have a rocky relationship. They were very in love at one point and went through a lot and so some feelings just don't go away. Justin's made a lot of mistake but he's matured and grown up."

The insider adds, "He has made attempts in the past to show Selena he cares for her but the timing hasn't been right. Justin has been seeing a few different girls."

A source also tells E! News that Selena's "been on tour and he's been traveling they haven't seen each other."

After posting a number of photos with Richie on Instagram, Justin caught some backlash from fans on the app. "I'm gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don't stop the hate this is getting out of hand," he wrote on Instagram. "If you guys are really fans you wouldn't be so mean to people that I like."

Out of what seemed to be left field, Selena apparently decided to clap back. "If you can't handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol – it should be special between you two only," she reportedly wrote. "Don't be mad at your fans. They love you."

After some more indirect back and forth between the former lovebirds, the commentary seemed to have subsided, but Gomez reignited the conversation by backtracking on the entire ordeal. "What I said was selfish and pointless," she wrote on Snapchat.

Meanwhile, Bieber completely deleted his Instagram account.
