HBOThe bad news just keeps coming for us, fellow Game of Thrones fans, and this is the worst of all: season eight will officially be the last season.
HBO president Casey Bloys confirmed Saturday during HBO's summer press tour that there are only two more seasons left of everybody's favorite show. Combine this with the fact that season seven will be shorter than normal, and it will be delayed, and won't be eligible for the 2017 Emmys, and we might as well all just go into hibernation for the next year.
When asked if there was any chance of more than eight seasons, Bloys crushed our dreams.
"They have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," Bloys said. "If I could get them to do more I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they [need] to make the best version of their show."
As for the specific number of episodes, season seven is "locked in" at seven. However, season eight may have more or less.
"They know we'll take as many as they'll give us," Bloys said.
As for that dream of a spin-off, which would potentially tell the story of the Mad King, it doesn't sound like it's happening...yet.
"We've talked about it, it's not something I'm not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively," Bloys said. "I'm not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they're just about to start production. It's a pretty intense production, they're about to start production soon. But I'm open to it. The guys weren't opposed to it, but there's no concrete plans or anything like that at this point."
As for the Emmy race, Bloys isn't all that concerned, despite the fact that the seven kingdoms walked away with 23 nominations this year.
"It's always good to win more Emmys," Bloys said. "That said, that's not our main goal. The main goal is to do the best show possible for our subscribers and fans, so we take David [Benioff] and Dan's [Weiss] lead on what they think they need to do to make the best show, and obviously shooting in a cold climate is what they need."
And besides, it's not like HBO, which received 94 nominations this year alone, really needs Game of Thrones anyway.
"I will point out that even if you took Game of Thrones' Emmys away this year, we'd still have more than anybody else."
So there, we guess.
