The movie that ignited the relationship between Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander is finally coming to the big screen. And if the actors' chemistry in person is any indication, their connection in The Light Between Oceans will be Oscar-worthy on its own.

The psychological drama, based on the 2013 novel by M. L. Stedman, is in theaters Sept. 2. The real-life couple, coming off a triumphant awards season for Vikander, play a childless couple who raise a baby they rescue from a rowboat as their own. Complications ensue.

In an interview with E! News, the couple discussed the dynamics of their respective characters in their upcoming film.

Vikander described the multifaceted character of Isabel, stating, "She's openly fierceful but also openly very vulnerable and I think that's something you relate to and connect to, and in this film when sometimes she doesn't make even the best or the right choices or decisions—you kind of still know they come from her heart and not from a bad place."

Fassbender adds, "She's a woman of action as well you know." He reasons, "She steps forward and does, so if she wants something she goes for it. I think that's a pretty attractive quality about her and it's all sort of unfiltered. So what she thinks she says, she's a modern character for that time."

He was apparently still talking about Vikander's character, Isabel, though the same could be said of his girlfriend herself.

When describing the character of Tom, Alicia says, "He's so grounded and even though he's gone through all this—he's gone through a whole war."

About the film's wartime setting, Fassbender admits, "Also there was, not to be funny about it, but there was a serious lack of men [on the homefront], as well. This is what the war did, they took a generation away. So, not to sort of take anything away from Tom... but you had to take what you could get."

Alicia laughed at Michael's remarks, jokingly adding, "This is a very romantic film! She took what she found."

Maria Menounous also caught up with Vikander, 27, at the Jason Bourne premiere in Las Vegas last week and asked how she felt being on a press tour with her boyfriend.

"I think we're both very excited—it's been almost two years since we finished the film, so for us to finally release the film to the world...I've seen a late cut of the film and I think we're all very proud," the Oscar winner said.
