The Get Down Trailer Will Give You Blast From the Past (In the Best Way Possible)

Netflix's musical period drama will debut on August 12

Step back Empire, there's a new musical drama coming your way and it's going back to the past for the action. Get your first look at Netflix's The Get Down in the trailer below.

From Baz Luhrmann, The Get Down chronicles the rise hip-hop in New York City in the late 1970s. So long disco! The series follows the lives of several kids from the South Bronx. Nas serves as executive producer alongside Grandmaster Flash is an associate producer with Catherine Martin as executive producer, playwrite and co-creator Stephen Adly Guirgis as executive producer and many others on board as consultants, including graffiti artists.

Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smits, Giancarlo Esposito and Jaden Smith star. Look for real-life icons to play a role in the series and archival footage of New York in the 1970s to be used in the series. The Get Down will feature original music as well as re-imaginings of classic songs from the era.

"The series is very true to the early hip hop scene - the people that were there are all in this story, as well as people you never meet until now," Nas said in a statement. "It's the first time we all get to see a series about the time hip hop began."

The first six episodes of season one premiere Friday, August 12 on Netflix. The soundtrack hits stores the same day. Part two of season one, which is six episodes, will debut in 2017.
