Nicole Richie, sitcom star?

The reality TV alum is bringing the funny back, this time breaking into the scripted comedy world with a series regular role on NBC's upcoming Great News in a bit of cast reshuffling, E! News has confirmed.

The series, written by 30 Rock alum Tracy Wigfield and exec produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, centers on a mother-daughter relationship put to the test when the mom (Andrea Martin) begins interning at her daughter's (Briga Heelan) place of work, a cable news network. Richie is taking over the role of Portia, the hip, young co-host of the show within the show, replacing Kimrie Lewis-Davis.

Described as sometimes a shrewd social media genius, while other times a clueless idiot, Portia takes little interest in her older co-host's (played by John Michael Higgins) vision for a hard-hitting traditional news program. The role marks Richie's first series regular role in the scripted realm. She is, of course, an alum of The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, as well her recent VH1 reality show, Candidly Nicole.

THR first reported the news.

Great News is slated to debut on NBC at midseason.
