But that was to be expected, at least based on the first time around.
The mom of 1 1/2-year-old daughter James is expecting baby No. 2 with husband Ryan Reynolds, and while we're still some months away from his or her arrival, let's take a closer look at how Lively's second pregnancy is progressing, from the earliest signs that a baby was on the way to her plans for raising well-adjusted kids in this crazy world.
The More the Merrier:
Rumors began swirling in mid-April when Lively was covering her midsection in a certain way while filming reshoots for The Shallows. Not much on its own, but the actress' brother-in-law in hindsight practically confirmed that there might be another baby Reynolds on the way when he noted on Instagram how the family was growing.
It's no secret that Lively and Reynolds wanted more children after James was born toward the end of 2014, and Lively has made it clear time that her first priority is family. But she also loves her job, heading to work on The Shallows just eight months after giving birth.
"I'm always ambitious about film-making," Lively told Marie Clair UK last month. "But I love my personal life so much—and my family so much—that it takes a lot to make me want to leave the house."
Reynolds echoed her familial sentiments in an interview with Details magazine.
"We'd love to have a big family. We both come from big families—my parents did four, Blake's did five," he gushed. "A lot of people say it's crazy, but we'll only know when we're there, you know?"
So all of this big-family talk and Lively's masked midsection got us thinking...maybe James' little sibling was on the way.
The Confirmation:
As one of Hollywood's favorite couples, the excitement was too much for us to contain, and we weren't alone! "They are very excited," a source shared with E! News when we confirmed that Lively was pregnant again. "Blake always wanted two or three kids."
Another source disclosed that the couple was already thinking about what to call their new bundle of joy.
"Blake is only in her second trimester, but she already has some baby names in mind," the source told E! News exclusively. "She has been talking about it with Ryan and her close friends."
Lively and Reynolds are known for trying to maintain as much , so it wasn't surprising that they decided to keep their name ideas to themselves. But after the less-conventional pick of James for their first daughter, who knows what Lively and Reynolds have in mind this time!
Sweet Style:
Hoodies and sweatpants? Not when there are red carpets that need walking on! The actress looked positively radiant at the 2016 MET Gala, which marked her first official event since news broke that she was expecting. And this mama was looking good!
She admitted to E! News that she's been indulging when it comes to her pregnancy cravings. "I do have a sweet tooth, but a good sweet tooth—not overly sweet, not saccharin. Like dark chocolate," Lively said. "I like salty and sweet."
That's what we call the best of both worlds!
Living Life:
Now we enter the era of Lively as a maternity fashion icon for the second time around.
After becoming a pregnancy-style all-star in 2014, Lively continues to prove she is #fashiongoals in everything from daring designer dresses to modest maxis. Keeping it classy all day, every day, she's not shy about taking risks either, including the occasional bondage-inspired look... Slay, queen.
Looking to the Future:
Although Lively and Reynolds are public figures whose jobs require they make frequent forays into the spotlight, they've made it clear that they want to give their children a more normal upbringing.
"My husband and I chose a profession and a side effect of that is your personal life is public," Lively explained to Marie Claire UK. "Our child hasn't had the opportunity to choose whether or not she wants her personal life to be public or not. So in order to give her as much normality as possible, we want her to have a childhood like we had."
Lively and Reynolds have always tried to maintain as much privacy as possible, and from their comments about parenthood, we know their life revolves around family. Having kids has always been the cute couple's dream, and we can't wait to meet the latest addition to their family later this year. (Or at least hear stories about her.)
"It's the best," Lively told E! News about motherhood last year while promoting The Age of Adaline. "It's the thing that binds us all—family. We have very unique jobs for a living, but we all are a part of someone's family. It's a nice thing."
