The One Game of Thrones Emmy Snub That George R.R. Martin Is Upset Over

There's one actor on the HBO series who Martin wishes had earned a 2016 Emmys nomination

By all accounts, Game of Thrones had a terrific showing during the reveal of the 2016 Emmy Awards nominations. The HBO hit walked away with a whopping 23 nods, the most of any series this year, including a staggering six in acting categories. It was a good, good day for the show—but for George R.R. Martin, it wasn't enough. 

To be sure, the author recognized that he and the series based on his books has plenty to celebrate. "This year's Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and once again Game of Thrones and HBO kicked ass and took names," he wrote on his blog. "HBO collected more nominations than any other network... once again. And Game of Thrones was responsible for a big chunk of those... 23 nominations all told, more than any other series... for the second year in a row (we had 24 last year)."

In the acting categories, previous nominees Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Emilia Clarke were joined by first-timers Maisie Williams, Kit Harington, as well as the legendary Max von Sydow in the Guest Role category for his work as the Three-Eyed Raven. The six nominees are a record-breaking number for the series, but Martin wasn't shy in his belief that there ought to be one more name added to list. "I am thrilled and happy for all our nominees, of course... but it made me especially happy to see Kit and Maisie get some love from the Academy at last," he wrote. "About damn time, I say. They are several years overdue. (And I would have loved to see Sophie Turner on that list as well. I know, I know, I'm greedy)." As Sansa Stark, Turner has a standout year, teaming up with estranged half-brother Jon Snow to reclaim their home of Winterfell, but alas, it wasn't enough to earn her a nod.

Aside from it's six acting nominations, Game of Thrones is again nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, a prize it took home at last year's ceremony. The show also earned one nod for Outstanding Writing and two for Outstanding Directing, among many more technical nominations.
