This Is What the World Was Like the Last Time Blink-182 Had a Number One Album

No, it's not actually 2001.

Do not adjust your computer screens. It is, in fact, still 2016. And yes, Blink-182 currently has the number one album in America.

Are you tripping yet?

The surprising news came in this morning, after a successful sales weekend for the band's recent release, California. The album dropped on the first of the month and is the group's first in a whopping five years (and also the first without member Tom DeLonge). And as of today, it up and toppled Drake's current reign, knocking Views off of the top spot.

It's probably a hard pill to swallow for Drake, but for the rest of us it provides an amazing opportunity for a walk down memory lane. Blink-182 hasn't had a number one album since 2001's venerable cultural milestone Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, featuring such hits as "Happy Holidays You Bastard" and "Shut Up." The last time Blink-182 had a number one album, Google was barely a thing. Spotify, the streaming service that most fans will use to listen to California today, hadn't even been invented yet.

In the spirit of reminiscing, let's look back on everything that was happening in the world the last time our musical charts favored Blink-182.

We were just finally getting over all those Y2K scares.

Wikipedia had just been invented. 

The music industry sued Napster and forced it to shut down.

Airport TSA screeners didn't need background checks. 

Enron was still a thing. 

Apple released...wait for it...the iPod.

The first Harry Potter movie hit theaters.

And the book series was only on novel five.

Shrek and Pearl Harbor were dominating the box office.

Dido was a super popular musician.

A gallon of gas cost, on average, $1.46.

A postage stamp cost 34 cents. (And yes, people still used stamps, too.)

CSI was a super popular show. (LOL!)

But also, Everybody Loves Raymond, 7th Heaven and The West Wing were still on TV.

George W. Bush was just beginning his reign.

3G wireless service was about to be a thing.

Gmail DIDN'T EXIST.

GOOGLE MAPS DIDN'T EXIST.

And, most importantly, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were an It Couple.
