It's crunch time.

And no, we're not talking about crunchy '80s hairstyles. We're talking about how messy things can get when products aren't used correctly. "A lot of times people think of hairspray as this outdated throwback styling product, but when used correctly it can help hold your style together for longer," clarified TRESemmé stylist John D.

Whether you're a perpetual hairspray user or you don't touch the stuff, it's about time you learn why celebs and stylists alike swear by it—especially for red carpet events.

It Actually Leaves a Very Natural Look: "Hairsprays of the past used to be heavily alcohol-based, but today's varieties leave hair soft and touchable," said the pro. The stylist's go-to is TRESemmé Tres Two Extra Hold Hairspray, an affordable aerosol option that he uses to complete virtually every style he creates.

Pair With a Mousse for Optimal Hold: "I always say start with a mousse (like TRESemmé TRES Two Extra-Firm Control Mousse) for a lasting hold and finish with a hairspray to keep the style put," shared the pro. His big takeaway? If you actually take the time to do your hair daily, hairspray shouldn't be used in the process (it will actually overwork and damage your hair). So, only use your hairspray when your look is finished (a.k.a. when you're done styling).

How You Apply It Matters Most: Especially if you don't use hairspray regularly, you know that too close of a spritz or too heavy of a hand can leave that style undesirable (read: wet and sticky). To prevent, hold the can 6 to 10 inches from your face and spray in a wave-like motion. "The idea is to keep the can moving like a cloud, this will lock in any style for a long-lasting hold, guaranteed," summed up the pro.
