Monday marked an historic day for supporters of abortion rights in the U.S. The Supreme Court threw out a Texas abortion access law that would have closed down all but a handful of clinics in the southern state.

"When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners, faute de mieux, at great risk to their health and safety," Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote in her opinion.

Shortly after the ruling, The Daily Show Twitter tweeted a joke that immediately faced backlash. "Celebrate the #SCOTUS ruling! Go knock someone up in Texas!" the account wrote. Users on Twitter responded instantaneously, disapproving of the Comedy Central show's joke.

"From someone who was a guest on your show (and treated fairly): This was in exceptionally poor taste," one user wrote. "I like snark as much as the next guy, but … there is a line. And you crossed it at 120 mph. Shameful."

"This tweet is so vile," another responded.

"That's a lot of offensive for very little laugh," another tweeted.

After an overwhelming response, The Daily Show addressed the tweet, clarifying what it meant. "Friends, we're certainly not promoting abortions. Just excited about #SCOTUS reaffirming right to choose," the account posted.

Even with the follow-up, people weren't pleased with The Daily Show. "Abort your account," responded one user.

"Don't make excuses, you're making it worse. Just admit you were off the mark (it happens, even comedy), so we can all move on," wrote another.
