How The Walking Dead Is Keeping That Big Death Under Wraps

Find out to what lengths producers of the AMC hit took to keep the resolution to season six's cliffhanger a secret

The powers-that-be behind the scenes at The Walking Dead are doing everything in their power to keep the identity of Negan's victim a secret until the very minute the scene airs on AMC this fall. And we mean everything.

When season six came to a close this spring, Jeffrey Dean Morgan's dastardly Negan had 11 of our beloved zombie apocalypse survivors on their knees, taunting each of them with his barbed wire-wrapped bat named Lucille before finally deciding on one to off. Viewers witnessed the horrifying death from the POV of the soon-to-be-deceased, keeping us (and the cast) in the dark on exactly who met their maker. But now that production on season seven has begun in Atlanta, the revealing death scene needs to be filmed. What's a showrunner to do when zealous fans have taken to flying drones over your set and you've got a shocking death to keep under wraps? Kill everyone, of course.

THR reports that each of the 11 cast members in the fateful cliffhanger have taken their turn filming a brutal death scene at the hands of Negan. It won't be until the show's producers and the episode's director get into the editing room with the editors that the correct scene will be chosen and placed in the season premiere. Will it be Carl (Chandler Riggs), Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Eugene (Josh McDermitt), Maggie (Lauren Cohan), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Arron (Ross Marquand), Rosita (Christian Serratos), Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) or Glenn (Steven Yeun)? Only time will tell. But the remaining 10 other death scenes left on the cutting room floor ought to make for one hell of a DVD bonus feature.

A request for comment from AMC was unanswered as of press time.

We may have to wait until October to find out who bit the dust, but at least the cast has been made aware. "Yeah I know. I know what's happening," Gurira told E! News' Marc Malkin recently on the red carpet at the Tony Awards. "I'll tell you this much—I know something. I know a little bit more than you."
