Although the couple never shied away from gushing about each other from the start of their whirlwind romance, they were also no strangers to dealing with some troubles in paradise. Whether it was defending their relationship from the public or overcoming personal hurdles they were facing behind closed doors, Depp and Heard have definitely had their ups and downs when it came to their romance.
In fact, there have been a number of signs that may have been suggesting that these two were heading for a split.

1. There Was Trouble Before the Vows: A source previously told E! News that the couple suffered some rockiness in their relationship prior to saying, "I do." The insider told us, "Because of their strong personalities they do not always see eye to eye. They are both stubborn and overly dramatic, which doesn't help when they disagree."
Additionally, we were told these two are both the type who need his or her own space—and that they understood and respected that about each other. Shortly after they tied the knot, we heard that sometimes a few days of not talking after a fight would usually do the trick—and that when they're busy off making movies, they hardly speak at all.
2. Plus That Whole Dog Situation: Last month, the couple sat stiffly side by side for a video they were required to make as penance for Heard bringing her two dogs into Australia unannounced (as in, she smuggled them in via private jet), and the whole awkward affair was calling for a parody—even from Depp himself.
"I would really like to apologize for not smuggling my dogs into England because it would have been a bad thing to do," Depp said with utmost mock-sincerity at a press junket for Alice Through the Looking Glass in the U.K., delighting the gathered media. "Because the Australians, though chipper…yeah, they're chipper."
As for the dogs, "I tried to kill them after Australia."
Perhaps Heard wasn't a fan of that joke?
3. Depp's Solo Press Tour: Speaking of the actor's promotional tour for his upcoming film Alice Through the Looking Glass, there was something noticeably missing from all of his appearances. Yep, Heard. His wife wasn't present at any red carpet event surrounding his movie, and while she may have been busy doing her own projects, it was still hard to ignore.
4. Heard's Solo Met Gala Appearance: And since we're on the subject of solo red carpet appearances, we must note that the actress appeared at the famous high-fashion Met Gala this year all by herself in May. Although his absence may have raised some questions, Heard was still wearing her wedding ring, which made it seem as though maybe there was a scheduling conflict.
5. They Went Completely MIA as a Couple: As we've pointed out, both Depp and Heard were seen on numerous occasions separately, but the last time these two stepped out together was in April, and their outing was to appear in court for their Australian dog case.
