Nashville Sings Its Last Song: Did the Series Finale Really Just Do That?!

How did Rayna, Juliette, Deacon, Avery and co. end their journeys?

It's the end of the tour for Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), Rayna James (Connie Britton), and everyone else on Nashville.

The series finale saw Rayna host a charity benefit (so many benefits on this show, glad they're all such giving people), Juliette finish the Oscar campaign trail, Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) reach a conclusion as far as what type of relationship they should actually have. Did Will (Chris Carmack) finally have words with the bigot news lady running a campaign against him? What became of Avery (Jonathan Jackson) and Layla (Aubrey Peeples)? And did Maddie (Lennon Stella) FINALLY snap out of it and go back to her family?

So how did everyone end up?

Just fine...except for Juliette.

In the last moments of the finale, instead of being happily reunited with his ex-wife, Avery (with kid in tow) was informed that the airport had lost contact with Juliette's plane, and it never made it to Nashville.

Juliette was flying back to her family after ditching the Oscars to open up on national TV, explaining to the entire world that she had been depressed and on drugs, and had attempted to commit suicide, until Jeff saved her. Everyone was on her side again, and Avery had also just dumped Layla after learning that she told the press about Juliette being present at Jeff's death, so it was about to be a very bright future for the star. But no. Now she's probably dead in a plane crash, and all we have to console ourselves is the fact that basically everyone else had a happy ending—even the people who might not have deserved it.

Rayna and Deacon

They ended the series with a kiss and a hug after a successful benefit, and a successful reunion with their oldest daughter, Maddie. Speaking of whom...

Maddie

Finally, Maddie came to her senses and went home, but it took a near sexual assault to get her there. When Rayna learned that her daughter was working with the same producer who once tried to rape her, she issued a public letter to her daughter, explaining what the producer did to her and begging Maddie to come home.

Maddie happened to read the letter while she was sitting in the producer's room, while he was getting them drinks. He tried to convince her that having sex with him was basically the only way to get ahead in her career, until Deacon showed up just in time to take Maddie home.

Gunnar and Scarlett

Scarlett finally told Gunnar she loved him, just as his girlfriend arrived to rub a trip to Aruba all up in Scarlett's face. They angrily decided to split up their act and go solo, but at the end of what was supposed to be their final show, Gunnar leaned over and planted a big, romantic kiss on Scarlett, leaving us to imagine that that was probably not their final show.

Will

Will finally got to confront Cynthia Davis, and while she tried at first to fake a fuss about some kind of homosexual terrorism, Will stuck it to her and, with Luke's encouragement, got back together with Kevin!

Layla

Layla got what was coming to her as everyone began realizing it was she who spilled about Juliette's involvement in Jeff's death. Glen quit on her, Avery dumped her, and all she could do was cry until she got a call that her album was about to blow up. So not all bad for Layla!

Luke (poor, lonely Luke)

After helping Will stick it to Cynthia, Luke headed back home and called his daughter, Sage, and asked to speak to her mother.

So other than Juliette's unfortunate ending, happy tears all around, yes?
