With a story as emotional as Dory's, only an equally as emotional theme song would do.
Fans only got surface information about Dory's life in Finding Nemo, but now that Finding Dory is just around the corner, audiences will learn all about Dory's journey and her family. As any Disney-Pixar fan knows, these animated films can be pure tearjerkers, as can their accompanying theme songs. It probably shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that Ellen DeGeneres (Dory) would ask Sia to perform "Unforgettable" for the end credits.
Written by Irving Gordon, "Unforgettable" was made famous by Nat King Cole in the 1950s, but the song won a Grammy in 1992 when Natalie Cole included it as a tribute to her late father on her album of duets. As for why Sia agreed to the song, she explained, "Dory's story makes me teary. When Ellen asked me, I couldn't refuse!"
"Dory's story makes a lot of people teary," Ellen responded on her show.
The song is such an appropriate choice, given Dory's lack of memory. Despite her troubles, however, Dory swam her way into everyone's hearts, making her truly unforgettable when Finding Nemo came out 13 years ago.
"Unforgettable / That's what you are / Unforgettable / Tho' near or far," Sia soulfully sings. "Like a song of love that clings to me/ How the thought of you does / things to me / Never before / Has someone been more / Unforgettable."
Finding Dory is set six months after the events of Finding Nemo, but this time the story will mostly take place at the Marine Biology Institute of California, where Dory was born. She lives with Nemo and his dad Marlin in a coral reef in the ocean. When she and her friend go on a field trip to the institute, she recalls memories of her past and family—basically, that she has both—and seeks to find her parents, Jenny and Charlie, portrayed by Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy.
We can only imagine how funny her adventure will be, but we know there are going to be some really emotional moments. Thank you, Sia, because we're already bringing the tissues.
