ABCWarning: The following contains major spoilers from tonight's new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If you haven't tuned in yet, you may want to turn away. Consider yourselves warned.
Well, this certainly doesn't bode well for fans of Alphonso Mackenzie.
Last week, we considered the odds of survival for each of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s major players in light of Daisy's (Chloe Bennet) grim vision involving outer space, a floating cross necklace and death for one of our faves. At the time, we put our money on Yo-Yo (Natalie Cordova-Buckley)—she of the cross necklace-wearing, expendable guest star status. And for most of tonight's episode, it looked as though our prophecy may have been has solid as Daisy's.
After being placed in a secure location for the last few weeks in light of Hive's (Brett Dalton) Inhuman hunt, the erstwhile Secret Warrior was called back into action by Coulson (Clark Gregg) this week to aid with the Daisy recovery mission—putting her right back into harm's way and making us feel like we ought to go put some money down on the ponies. There's no way the show is actually sacrificing a main character, we continued to tell ourselves throughout the hour. It was clear that it was "Adios, Yo-Yo." Until it wasn't.
In the final moments, once Daisy had safely returned to to HQ no longer under Hive's parasitic sway (more on that in a moment), Yo-Yo and Mack (Henry Simmons) shared a moment. It was a sweet moment—but it just might be a moment that doomed him, as well. You see, after encouraging her burgeoning love interest to keep the faith, Yo-Yo jetted out of there, but not without leaving Mack with a particularly unwelcome parting gift: Her cross necklace.
Look—there's still plenty of opportunity in next week's two-hour season finale for that cross necklace to wind up around someone else's neck, but it's clear that the writers want us worried about Mack. Message received, writers. Consider us officially worried.
While Mack may be in danger, at least one fallen agent found her way back to safety this week. After weeks of being under what essentially was a parasitic bender thanks to the intoxicating allure of Hive's sway, Daisy was successfully rescued when the team tricked her into thinking Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) had broken out and was coming her way. Instead of her boyfriend boarding that quinjet, the team sent Lash her way to do what he does best: Kill Inhumans.
While they were taking the risk that he might kill Daisy during his attack on Hive, the team reasoned that he'd never hurt her before, so he might not start now. Desperate times call for desperate measures. But they were right. Lash was able to actually wound Hive—someone no one has been able to do thus far—while also successfully removing the parasite from Daisy's body. Sadly, Lash's first act of heroism proved to be his last, meaning we're going to have to get our Blair Underwood fix somewhere else and May's (Ming-Na Wen) probably going to have some serious conflicted feelings when it comes to Daisy.
But if she and the rest of the team are still feeling some type of way towards Daisy after what she did while under sway, they're going to have to set that aside because Hive's plan has become crystal clear and it's a doozy. Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) believe the maniacal Inhuman hopes to create a shockwave high enough in the atmosphere so that his new pathogen would be able to infect a significant percentage of the human race. Oh—and he's just stolen a fully operational warhead to hurry things along.
S.H.I.E.L.D. certainly has its work cut out for them.
