Harry Styles' hair had taken on its own identity.
Cindy Crawford once likened the One Direction star's ponytail to her famous trademark mole. Harry's hair did its own thing, and those iconic floppy locks became part of his identity...but no longer.
That's because, as you all should know by now, Harry cut off his hair. The great chop was for charity, so we can't be too upset about it. Then again, if you scroll through the tweets attached to #RIPHarrysHair, you'll see that bidding adieu to those tremendous tresses was a big deal.
Harry's lopped locks are hardly the first to cause controversy. Once upon a time--back in 1999, to be precise—Keri Russell's Felicity character got the haircut of all haircuts.
This was, for reasons that still aren't entirely clear, just beyond. It's been almost 17 years and we still can't even. Keri's long, natural curls were a huge part of Felicity's identity, and with just a few, dramatic chops of a scissor, they became frizzy remnants of her soul scattered on the floor.
As Keri noted just last month on Late Night With Seth Meyers, people "freak(ed) the hell out" over that drastic 'do. She even delivered a comical message to her younger self, warning, "...whatever you do, don't cut your hair short during the second season of Felicity."
"No I'm serious," she continued. "People will freak the hell out. You'll get hate mail. You'll even get death threats. But gradually your hair will grow back and your fans will forgive you, but you will never--and I repeat never--forgive your fans...and you will have learned a valuable lesson: Never trust anyone."
Justin Bieber learned this the hard way back in 2011 when he ditched those signature Bieber bangs. Beliebers embraced his new look, but others questioned if this was a branding blunder for the oh-so-marketable teen idol. Justin kept his cool with this coiffure, though, and although it was his most notable hair hacking to date, he's shaken things up many a time since then. He's been blond, he's gone lavender, he's even tried out dreads—and remarkably, the world still keeps on turnin'.
Miley Cyrus' hair moment came circa 2012. Her famous topknot was put to rest, a new, "Can't Be Tamed" version of Miley was born. From there, it was twerking, Hannah Montana's murder and everything in between.
Jennifer Lawrence lopping off her locks in 2013 didn't result in a dramatic image, but it was quite literally breaking news. During an appearance on The Daily Show, she recalled receiving a breaking news alert from CNN about her haircut.
"That was seriously the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me in my entire life," she said. "Can you imagine, getting your haircut and then finding out about it on the news? That was the weirdest thing that has ever happened to me."
Hair must really be full of secrets, huh? Why else would we have so little chill over the loss of it?

Just remember, it grows.
