Goodbye, beloved tresses.

Harry Styles just did the unthinkable: He chopped off his hair. No, this isn't a joke. He really did take scissors to those lovely locks, but we can't say it was a poor decision because he did it for an amazing cause. The One Direction crooner cut his ponytail off for the British charity Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs made from real hair for children who have experienced hair loss to cancer treatment.

Harry posted a pic of his hand holding his braided ponytail while giving a thumbs up. "Whoops," he captioned the Instagram pic. "#Littleprincesstrust."

Don't freak out, Directioners. Just remember hair always grows back. While he hasn't revealed his new look just yet—c'mon, it's Harry, he'll look good—it's great to see that he's putting those much-loved strands to good use.

So far, fans seem to be accepting the (yet-to-be-seen) look, responding on Twitter, "End of an era." What's debatably sadder, however, is the other era that ended: the end of 1D. Yes, the band is on a hiatus for a couple of years, and even though they've said they're going to come back, we won't know for sure until it actually happens. Even Simon Cowell wasn't sure what was going to happen.

"I don't know if it's a hiatus or a breakup, to be honest," he said in an interview with Billboard. "In a weird way, I don't want to know. I don't think they've had enough time to experience what it's like not being in the group to really answer that."

The former American Idol star also said the band was intent on taking time for themselves.

"Whenever I was with them, we talked about it, and I couldn't argue with them," Cowell said about the band's hiatus. "They had achieved so much in a short period of time, and I didn't want them to get jaded. As I've gotten older, I've learned to trust people more, particularly artists. They'll decide when they want to come back together."

We can only hope Harry's hair grows back in time for their future (maybe) reunion.
