How Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Owned the Met Gala Without Lifting a Finger

It was so very Olsen-y.

Let's be clear to start, here: The Met Gala is full of try-hards.

And that's a very good thing! The annual party (or, should we say, charity fundraiser) is a huge deal and deserves to be treated as such. Everybody wins when celebs go all out to look (and be) their best at the Met Gala. We, the fans and the press and everyone else, get to ooh and ahh over all the sneak peek shots of glam squads in anticipation of the big reveal, and then again as we watch all the beautiful people parade down the red carpet looking just jazzed to be attending the fanciest event in town. The celebrities win because, well, they look fabulous and get to be jazzed about attending the fanciest even in town.

Which is what makes it all the more mesmerizing, entertaining and all-around impressive when someone swoops right into the hoopla without giving a single, well, you know what, and blows everybody else away. Or should we say...two someones. Welcome to the Met Gala, Olsen twins.

For a twosome as uninterested in the spotlight as Mary-Kate and Ashley, the Met Ball is their perfect stage. It's a party filled with only the most important people in fashion, art and film and nothing is required of them but to stand there and look cool. And if there was anyone with any doubt as to whether the Olsen Twins could upstage the bubblier vixens of Hollywood, last night just proved you wrong.

Just look at these two after all! Who else could come dressed like they're about to star in the flea market version of Practical Magic and still straight-up slay? They just stood there in all their caftan-ed glory and mesmerized an entire city. They didn't even crack a smile the entire time, but that makes sense because they were busy mentally rehearsing their spells.

Once they made it inside to the respite of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's storied halls, they relaxed and really let loose. Just look at them here enjoying the immensely pleasurable company of Jared Leto

Oh, that's right. They are the Olsen Twins and Jared Leto should deign to occupy their shared air. He may have been dressed like the Mad Hatter sitting in for another painting of American Gothic, but did he manage to get a laugh out of MK&A? Of course not. They're too professional even for smizing.

For Vogue's part, the magazine set up a pretty killer photo booth inside the party. They hired a fancy cameraman, built a crazy set inspired by the Manus x Machina theme, and pulled out all the stops to produce awesome videos of celebrities in their element. Like Alicia Vikander twirling in her Louis Vuitton. Or Kendall Jenner performing her signature catwalk. Or Kim Kardashian and Kanye West getting their couples dance on

And then it was the Olsen twins' turn.

Has there ever been a more perfect four-to-six seconds? Never in human history. The power of the collective mind of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen is so strong as to will us to believe that they just performed the best photo booth dance of all time, when in reality they stood there and literally did nothing. But it was the most fabulous nothing we've ever seen.

They've put a spell on us, and now we're theirs.
