The iconic pop star was found dead at age 57 at his Paisley Park studios in Minnesota Thursday. The cause of his death remains under investigation and has fueled speculation about his health, which first sparked earlier this month when he canceled two concerts and later fell ill on a plane, prompting an emergency landing and a short hospitalization.
Prince was an active member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in St. Louis Park in Minneapolis. A source told E! News exclusively Prince was last seen there on March 23, at a Memorial for Jesus's Death service. He was accompanied by five people.
The source said many members of the congregation noted Prince "didn't have his regular color" and that he looked pale. The source also said the singer was scheduled to attend a special talk at the Kingdom Hall on April 3 but fell ill and canceled.
Another source said that Sunday services will close with the announcement "Brother Rogers Nelson fell asleep in death on Thursday."
Prince became a Jehovah's Witness in 2001.
A source had told E! News "he was very religious and adamant about not taking any sort of medication." According to the Jehovah's Witnesses website, members may accept medicines and medical treatments if they do not "conflict with Bible principles."
Prince had fallen ill on a plane earlier this month and was hospitalized after an emergency landing. The incident sparked concerns about his health. At a dance party on April 16 at Paisley Park, Prince reassured fans about his health status.
"Wait a few days before you waste any prayers," he told them.
The singer was known for being a private person and rarely talked about any aspects of his personal life, let alone his religion. However, as a Publisher in his congregation, he did sometimes go door-to-door in Minnesota to speak about his faith.
"Would you like to talk about God?" the U.K. newspaper The Mirror quoted Prince as asking someone politely at their home in 2010.
"Sometimes people act surprised but mostly they're really cool about it," he told the outlet.
E! News has learned that in accordance with his faith, he often did charity work anonymously, did not celebrate birthdays or other holidays and would not grant autographs because it is "preaching worship."
Prince was remembered fondly at Kingdom Hall.
"He was kind and gentle, funny and he liked to laugh," another source told E! News.
