Grey's Anatomy Recap: Is This the Beginning of the End for Bailey and Ben?

Ben screwed up big time, and it does not look good for the couple

That was a tough one.

Grey's Anatomy just gave us two full hours of Bailey, Ben, and the ultimate conflict of interest.

While the hospital was locked down for a few minutes to locate a missing child, Dr. Warren (Jason George) got stuck in a hallway with a pregnant car crash victim named Gretchen. When her blood pressure dropped and she passed out, he felt his only option was to deliver the baby via c-section...just as the elevator doors opened, meaning he could have then made it to the OR.

Unfortunately, neither the baby nor Gretchen survived, which made Ben's situation a lot more serious. He struggled to actually take it seriously, but the chief (Chandra Wilson) was taking it very seriously.

She formed a committee to decide disciplinary action, consisting of Meredith, Maggie, and Owen, and it was up to them to determine whether or not Ben was telling the truth about not having seen the elevator doors open.

All the while, Bailey had to wrestle with the continuing collision of her work and home life. Ben can't stop screwing up in an effort to save everyone's lives regardless of rules or protocol, and Bailey then has to choose whether to treat him as her husband or as the student he still is.

In the end, she punished him with a six month suspension, despite the committee deciding that he was not, in fact, lying about not seeing the elevator doors.

Ben totally freaked out about the suspension, knowing it would put him way behind the rest of his class, but his noble screw-ups have been far more dangerous than they have helpful. He and Bailey did not end the night on good terms, but Bailey did get a win. She decided to focus all her efforts on keeping Gretchen's husband, Omar, alive. She even violated his DNR to restart his heart, and miraculously, he woke up at the end.

Elsewhere, Callie and Penny are contemplating moving to New York together so Penny can take a grant, and April and Jackson are still not doing well, but they did have a little bonding moment at the end of the episode when she had him feel the baby kick. Sure, they had just discussed how much they hate the people they've become and that their relationship is probably unfixable, but we'll take whatever happiness we can get.

As for Ben and Bailey, we hope that ship hasn't sailed, but it may just be too hard for a marriage between the chief and a resident to ever work out.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
