Watch: Is "The Mindy Project" Becoming a Zombie Show?

What's next for The Mindy Project? "Romantic comedies never have sequels," Matt Warburton, executive producer and writer on the series, told E! News at NBCUniversal's Summer Press Day. "But maybe our show is like a sequel to a romantic comedy, where the story keeps going."

"The one really fun thing about my show, as someone who loves the genre of romantic comedies, is there are so many challenges once you get together with someone who is very different, which is what you see in a lot of movies," Mindy Kaling, the creator and star of The Mindy Project, told us. "But there's also so much comedy to explore and since nobody does it, it's really a fertile area."

So part two of season four of The Mindy Project is what happens after the "happy ending," when the guy and girl get together and then, well, sort of split up? And then zombies. Wait, what?

"We love The Walking Dead," Kaling said.

"We're going to make our show more like that," Warburton added. "We're bringing in a couple cast members from The Walking Dead…" Those cast members include Lauren Cohan and Ross Marquand, in addition to more guest stars like Seth Meyers, Cristin Milioti, Greta Gerwig, Adam Pally, Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass and Anders Holm.

This season expect to see Mindy socialize with female characters outside of work, something the producers did in response to fans on social media. And about those fans, well, producers have heard you and know you had a lot of "feels" about the end of the first half of season four with Mindy and Danny (Chris Messina) at odds over a second baby and Mindy's role in the family. So they have a message for you.

"Our show is the most gratifying because our fans are really social media savvy and so they're contacting us all the time…It's so gratifying to check in and have them be like ‘I had all the feels' and ‘I was in tears' and their liberal uses of emojis," Kaling said. "What we'll say is we never want to take them on a path that's going to short change them…they should feel safe with is."

"They're going to feel every emoji this season, from heart to eggplant," Warburton added.
