The Now That's What I Call Music! CDs Are as Popular as Ever—but Do You Remember the Very First CD?

How's this for a blast from the past: Now That's What I Call Music! is flying off the shelves.

And no, you didn't just find yourself back in the year 2001. This is 2016 news. Most readers are probably looking for proof, in which case we cite the recent release of the latest edition (that would be Now That's What I Call Music! 93, for inquiring minds), which just became the fastest selling album of the year in the UK.

According to Forbes, the compilation CD has sold a whopping 247,000 copies across the pond just in the last week. That blew past the record held by David Bowie's Blackstar, and analysts are saying that its proof that these types of albums are still kicking after all these decades. Universal Music Group, which puts out these musical time capsules, even called Now the world's best-selling multi-artist albums. Phew!

But enough with this groundbreaking news. Since we got such a kick out of the fact that not only is this album still breaking sales records, but there have been almost one hundred different versions made, that we decided to take a look back at where it all started: The very first Now That's What I Call Music.
